Savage rioting in several parts of Calcutta broke out to-day as the result of a “hartal,” or a day of protest in connection with the arrests of Jawahartal Nehru and Sen Gupta. Two trams were set on fire and three others wrecked. The Fire Brigade was stoned by the mob and several firemen gravely injured. In the main thoroughfare of the city a crowd of rioters hurled stones at trams and passing cars, which Europeans were driving and the police, the latter of whom were forced to open fire. The casualties are at present unknown. Auxiliary forces with armoured cars were called out, and are patrolling the streets, which were practically deserted at noon. In other parts of the city the traffic was held up by jeering crowds, who dislocated the tram service by cutting the wires.
