MAGISTRATE’S COURT. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday morning, before Messrs G. Dash and C. L. H. Gunn, J A first offending inebriate was convicted and discharged. A total of fifteen civil cases were set down for hearing, of which five were struck out and seven adjourned. In one case judgment was confessed. Judgment by default was given in the following cases:—Mary Hughes v. F Robinson claim £1 17s 6r. costs 12 -; j. c. Hill v. F. Stirling claim £4, costs £1 3s 6d. EASTER MARKETS. A consignment left Waimate yesterday which is destined to be consumed in Christchurch during Easter. The consignee is a well-known farmer of Waihao Forks, and the consignment sisted of twenty young turkeys, all this year’s birds. On being placed on the scales the young gobblers were found to average 171 b, and the hens about half that weight. While the birds were being consigned several farmers present remarked that they regretted not having bred turkeys instead of sheep this year, on account of the 1 marked difference in the returns, but j it is doubtful if many lots would equal in quality the one under review. j J EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE. The fifth annual meeting of the Waimate Branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held on Saturday last. The annual report stated that the membership was now about 40 members. The balance sheet showed a very satisfactory balance in credit of £3B I 19s 4d. The fine work in the interests 1 of the Branch done during the year Iby Miss E. Alder, Messrs C. W. Kibblewhite and A. Bradley was worthy of special mention. and the I committee tendered sincere thanks. | The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers was as follows: —President. Mr B. A. Chambers, Carlton, Cadwallader. Kippenberger, McKeown and Shroeder; auditor, Mr L. F. Ensor! trustees, Messrs McKeown and Carlton; delegate to N.Z.E.1., Mr P. Shroeder.

It was resolved to arrange details for a presentation to an old and valued member who is shortly retiring on superannuation. On the motion of Mr Kippenberger. it was resolved to write to Messis Jobberns and Comes, Training College, Christchurch,- asking if they-could find it convenient. to give an address to branch members at Waimate during the May holidays.
