SCOUTS

By “PATHFINDER.” The Hobby enthusiasts of the Highfield Troop are at present keenly interested in their club work. The Stamp club was enlarged to include coins in the club activities last Friday evening, when A. S. M. Coates gave a short chat on stamp collection, and a prize for the best essay on this hobby was offered by him, to be completed by the following meeting night. The newly formed Meccano group is progressing favourably under the leadership of Scout E. Murray, and there are now eighteen beys in the group. A competition was held last Friday evening, in the building of a motor lorry chassis. The Scoutmasters’ trophies for the two best models were won by N. Saggers and W. Panton. Members are making arrangements for a bridgebuilding contest for the next meeting, and all seem very keen on the competition. As the Scouts have only a limited time to indulge :n their hobbies, they must come all prepared to do their bit without wasting time. The Highfield Scouter reports that now that the annual competitions are over, the usual Scout work has been resumed, and work is progressing steadily. There are quite a number of scouts ready for Proficiency Badge exI aminations. Six of the senior Cubs are undergoing a course of prepara- , tion work, with a view of an early l transfer into the Scout troop. Some of them are keen and others are loath to leave their cub pals, but after a ' little chat with their Cubber, they | realised that the time had arrived when they could be of more use and learn more by the transfer. The nine recruits of St. Mary’s Troop are making good progress towards their entry into the ranks of the Tenderfeet. The remainder of the troop have now settled down to General Scout work, and are working on courses of Proficiency instructions. Last Sunday the Troop assembled at the Post Office, marching in parade to the morning service at St. Mary’s. This monthly parade has been observed for some time now, but not be- j fore had such a record attendance ! been obtained. In their smart rig-out j they were a credit to the movement, j Scout Tizard read the morning lesson. !

A number of Scouters took Communion at St. Mary’s last Sunday morning.

At the meeting of the Northdown Te Rangi Committee during the week, it was decided to invite one of the troops, shortly after Easter, to a fraternal gathering in their den, and a sub-com-mittee was formed to make the necessary arrangements. A coning expedition was also decided upon, as the winter will shortly be here, and many folk will appreciate a few bags of cones.
