WOODBURY

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The annual meeting of the Woodbury Women's Institute was held on Tuesday in the Woodbury Hall. Mrs L. E. Williams presided over a large attendance of members. The following were elected members: Mesdames M. G. Williams. Jock McDonald and G. Hammond Junr. An invitation from the Orari Institute for two members to attend their birthday party was accepted with thanks, and Mrs Chisnall and Miss N. Uysaght will represent the Woodbury Institute. The annual report and balance sheet were read and a very satisfactory balance was shown. The committee’s annual report stated I that on April 9. 1929. the first meeting j of the newly-formed Institute was held, Mrs L. E. Williams presiding over an attendance of 33 members. The Institute started with 37 members, and to date 88 members had been enrolled. Meetings had been held every month, and the average attendance was now 60. A committee of 14 was elected, and seven committee meetings were held, the average attendance being 12. ! An extra meeting was held in Gerali dine on July 3rd when the Orari and Woodbury Institutes were addressed by Miss Law of the Y.W.C.T. In conjunction with the Orari Institute a most successful Arts and Crafts Exhibition was held in Geraldine in November. One of the monthly meetings took the form of a garden party which was held at Miss Tripp’s, Orari Gorge. Lectures and demonstrations had been particularly interesting and instructive, and included addresses on travel talk, gardening, home nursery, League of Nations, types of Government, and poultry farming. Demonstrations were given on paper mache, raffia work, soft toys, woolwork, glovemaking, cake icing, bandaging and netting. Proof of the success of these demonstrations could j be observed in the beautiful work exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition. The social part of the programme had been most enjoyable, and had consisted of play reading, games and competitions. The Institute had joined the National Concert of Women and Mrs J. S. Barker was elected delegate. One of the members, Miss Tripp was chosen to represent the New Zealand Federation at the Conference of County Women's Organisations to be held at Vienna in May. The Institute was also assisting to raise funds for the Obstetrical Society’s appeal. The I annual meeting had been arranged for April. The Committee thanked all who by addresses or demonstrations contributed so largely to the success of the first year; the "Timaru Herald” for the valuable assistance given in matters requiring publicity, and m publishing reports of meetings; Mr W. McClure for auditing the books; and M v McClure and Mr Blakiston for conducting the election. The Committee felt that members could look forward to the coming year with confidence, as tn first year had been characterised with such friendliness and good feeling. Mrs J. Charles congratulated the Institute on the excellent year’s work. The president described the progress made during the year, and referred to the possibility of several new Institutes starting shortly. It was decided that the meetings continue to be held on the second Tuesday of each month, and that the time of meeting during the winter be 2 p.m.

Mrs Turton proposed that the report and balance sheet be adopted, and this was carried unanimously.

Votes of thanks to the president id secretary were passed.

Miss Greenwood consented to give an exhibition of country dancing on Wednesday evening, and Mrs Day to provide the music. Arrangements were made in regard to the birthday party. The prizes for various competition's held during the year were presented as follows: —“Bring and Buy” competition, Mrs Cooling: "Insect Celebrities,” Mrs J. P. Wooding: "Sugar Bag,” Mrs J. M. Barker; "Observation,” Mrs J. Charles; “Early Photos,” Miss Lyons; “Summer Recipe,” Miss Manning. The supervisors, Messrs Blakiston and McClure, then announced the result of the ballot for the election of the committee, which resulted as follows:—Mesdames J. S. Barker, M. S. Barker, Blakiston, Chisnall, Mail, McLeod, Morris, J. Scott, Sharpe, Stonyer, L. C. Williams and Misses B. Lysaght, N. Lysaglit, J. Williams and Vance. The chair, which was taken by Mr Blakiston, and the election of president was proceeded with. This resulted in Mrs L. C. Williams being re-elected unopposed. Three hearty cheers were given for the scrutineers. Mr McClure congratulated the Institute on the way the election had been carried out, as there was not one informal ballot paper. A roll call, “Sing, say or a penny pay,” then followed, and some very good items were given and a few pence collected. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Charles and R. Harper and Misses Lyons and McLean. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. PERSONAL. Mrs A. Volckman, Te Moana, is visiting Christchurch. Mrs Wade and Mr R. 'Wade, Christchurch, are visiting Mrs G. H. Stonyer Orari Bridge.
