STATE OF CANADA STREET.

To the Editor of the " Timaru lieraid.” Sir, —In your issue of Wednesday last appeared a letter above the signature “Ratepayer” referring to the Canada Street right-of-way. It is pleasing to note that an outsider, so to speak, has seen fit to complain per medium of your journal. As a resident of Canada Street, I would like to add my support to “Ratepayer’s” letter. Residents of Canada Street pay rates the same as residents in other parts of the borough, and are surely entitled to some improvements. The right of way in question provides an outlet to North Street, and iu very handy when one desires to catch a bus. Tradesmen also use it, and numbers of children attending the Boys’ High School and West School naturally go by the shortest route. At night with the bordering trees grown wild, this thoroughfare is darker than the black hole of Calcutta. Could the Council erect a searchlight, I know not the correct name, and light the whole length of the right of way. Dozens of these lamps are used in Stafford Street to light up the outside of high buildings, so why not have merely one where it is urgently needed? In conclusion, I trust that the Council will have this matter attended to before the winter sets in. One thing is sure, however, and that is that the Council will not be compelled to install conveniences about this area, as in its present condition this right-of-way seems to be all that is required.—l am, etc., CANADA STREET RESIDENT.
