THE VALLEY OF DEATH.
Loss Of German ’Plane. CAUSE OF DISASTER OUTLINED. (United Press Association—By Electrlo Tel egraph—Copyright.) (Received April 8, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, April 7. It is believed that the German ’plane which crashed in Caterham Valley, was returning to Croydon owing to the wireless having failed, and in the darkness of the early morning, while seeking a landing place was firing many verey lights, when the ’plane crashed. The ’plane was used for joy-flying during week-ends. The machine caught fire and the explosion followed, blowing it to so many pieces that it was scattered over one hundred yards. It is doubtful if the cause of the disaster will be discovered. The pilot and wireless operator, aged 24. w'ere both frightfully injured. The valley has a bad name, and is avoided by English pilots in bad weather. Three disasters occurred there with serious loss of life. Pilots, descending to avoid mists, become trapped among the hills and fly blindly into the slopes.
