ROWING.
SINGLE SCULLS. The heats and semi-finals of the I Timaru Club’s handicap single sculls were rowed off last week, the final being contested on Monday evening. A feature of the race was the excellent handicapping, practically every heat being in doubt right to the finish. L. Howard and G. Bowden, two first year members, shaped exceptionally well in their heats, both lads putting in some solid work and sculling like old hands. The following were the results:— First heat—H. Bedford (12sec) lost to E. Campbell (7sec) by half a length. Second heat—J. Wain (9sec) beat M. S. Bracefield (40sec) by inches. Third heat—G. Bowden (18sec) lost to R. Bracefield (9sec) by half a length. Fourth heat—F. Hutton (16sec) lost to A. Perry (2sec) by three-quarters of a length. Fifth heat—L. Howard (20sec) a bye. Sixth heat—A. Parry (2sec) beat L. Howard (20sec) by three feet. Semi-finals—A. Perry drew with J. I Wain. In the row off Perry secured the verdict by three feet. Bracefield beat E. Campbell by three-quarters of a length. Final —R. Bracefield beat A. Perry. Both men got away smartly, but owing to a choppy side-swell steering was difficult. Half-way home Perry had gained slightly on his opponent, but on entering the smoother water of the harbour Bracefield held his own, and, despite solid work by Perry,, maintained his lead to the finish.
