WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. ' The monthly meeting of the committee of the Orari Women’s Institute took place on Thursday evening. Present, Mesdames G. A. M. Macdonald (president), Sydney Unwin. J. B. Roberts, H. A. Brenton, F. W. Grayburn, W. E. Cook (secretary), W. Hughes, Misses F. Grimsey, De Latour, and R. Killoh. The president opened the meeting with a few words of welcome to the new members. As the committee had power to enlarge its numbers, Mrs C. Unwin and Miss C. G. McQueen were elected. Correspondence was received from Miss A. Stops, Hawkes Bay, chief organiser of New Zealand for Women’s Institutes, and it was intimated that she would visit South Canterbury during the week following Easter. It was decided to arrange a special meeting for Miss Stops to address, and to invite all the ladies in the district to be present. Mrs S. Unwin, on behalf of the Entertainment Sub-Committee, submitted a draft copy of the programme for the birthday party, and this was passed. Arrangements were made for the decorating of the hall, and other necessary business attended to. It was reported that Mrs W. Smith had completed the birthday cake. A sub-committee to prepare the hall for the monthly meetings was set up as follows:—Mesdames J. Minnis, H. A. Brenton, W. Hughes, G. Payne. J. B. Roberts, C. Unwin. E. P. Chambers, L. Henderson, J. A. Henderson, Misses M. Taylor. J. de Lautour, F. E. Grimsey, these to form groups of three to take it in turns. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The committee of the Orari Horticultural Society held its final meeting on Friday evening. Mr W. E. Cook (president), was in the chair, while Mrs W. Watson. Messrs D. Vernall, G. Bray, T. Bates (treasurer), S. R. Muff, L. Pierce and C. Unwin (secretary) were present. Mr Unwin expressed his thanks to members of the Committee for their ready support during the past twelve months, and to the president and Mrs Cook for their many services in helping with the large amount of secretarial work he had to do. Correspondence was received from Messrs J. B. Roberts (Orari), Dr G. W. Curtis (Geraldine), H. Clark (Timaru), F. Cooper’s Ltd. (Wellington). Accounts amounting to £7/10/- were passed for payment. Owing to an over-payment to the Hall Committe, it was decided to ask for a rebate on their account for £4. The president reported that at the Tennis Club’s dance Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P. had made the official presentation to Miss Mackenzie of the £3O trophy for the single women’s competition, and that Mr Burnett had intimated that the competition would again be held next year. The treasurer’s annual report was read, showing a credit balance of £36/11/9. The receipts in every department of the show had shown a decided increase, amounting to £26/6/1 more than the previous show, while in addition was Mr Burnett’s special donation of £3O. The year’s working had shown a profit of over £lO. This year’s prize money was £3O/3/6, compared with £2O/3/6 last year.—The report was passed. It was decided to recommend to the annual meeting that next year the services of a secretary be obtained at a definite salary. NOTES. The annual meeting of the Horticulture Society will oe held in the Orari Hall on Wednesday. The first monthly meeting of “Idlawyl” Reading Club was held in the Hall on Wednesday evening when there was a good attendance. “The Dear Departed” and “The King’s Waistcoat” were read by members, and were followed by the reading of a couple of scenes from “Julius Caesar.” A canvass of the district in connection with the Obstetric Appeal has been made, and met good support from the local residents. The following amounts have been collected:—Mrs S. R. Muff £l, Mrs F. W. Grayburn £l. Mrs W. E. Cook £2/11/-, Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald £l. The amounts have been forwarded by these collectors to the main centre. PERSONAL. Mrs Kiely, Waltham, is on a visit to Orari, and is the guest of Mrs W. Quirke. Mr J. B. Roberts, and Miss Beth Roberts, Orari, are on a visit to Culver - den. North Canterbury. Miss Evelyn Stone-Wigg, Wellington, is l he guest of Mrs Stone-Wigg. Winchester College. Mrs Ross Brodie and Dr G. W. Curtis, two members of the “Orari Readers” Play Reading Circle, were appointed vice-presidents of the South Canterbury Drama League. Messrs C. H. Haslam, and F. Bates, Canterbury Education Board Inspectors, were visitors to the local school on Thursday. The Right Rev. Geo. Budd, Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, will be a visitor in Orari this week. He will address a meeting of the congregations of the various branches of the Orari Presbyterian charge. “FAREWELL” AFTERNOON. On Friday afternoon friends and neighbours of Mrs W. H. Ellery, Belfleld, visited her residence, to wish her farewell prior to her leaving the district. She has been a resident in the district for five years, and during that time endeared herself to her neighbours. who took advantage of the opportunity of presenting her with two specimens of amphora ware as a parting gift. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent by those present, among whom were Mesdames H. A. Brenton, T. Bennett, H. Quantock, D. Bennett, J. Burke, L. Greenaway, F. Priddle, T. Martin, Misses Sugrue, G. Sugrue and I. Bennett.
