SPORTING.

SOUTH CANTENBURY MEETING. SUCCESSFUL CONCLUDING DAY. Fine weather again favoured the S.C.J.C. on Saturday when the autumn fixture was brought to a highly successful conclusion. The atmosphere was muggy and the sky thundery-look-ing in the morning, but the afternoon was pleasantly fine until the racing ended. The track was fast, and will be benefited by a fall of rain, but the thick grass provided a cushion for the horses. The attendance was good, and the gate receipts were the largest for some time. The totalisator turnover for the day was £15,886/10/-, and the aggregate for the meeting £26,587. The last occasion on which a two-day fixture was got off was in November, 1928, when the Saturday investments amounted to £10,307/10/-, and for the two days the amount put through was £19,192. The racing was much more exciting than on the opening day. The starting showed very considerable improvement, and there were many keen finishes, each of the last two events on the card being won by a head. The management was of the customary high standard, and altogether the fixture was the most successful and profitable held for some time by the Club, which had been dogged by misfortune in the matter of unfavourable weather. There were nine starters in the Levels Hurdles, but a contingency necessitated the bracketing of Oriflamb and After Ten. Heisler 519, Mime 399, and the bracket 356 were the popular fancies. Heisler led Mime and After Ten to the first hurdle, and Heisler and Mime drew away racing to the next. Mime struck hard, and although he did not fall, he bumped his rider out of the saddle, and after a game attempt to hang on, Hall was dropped. This left Heisler to turn into the back stretch well clear of Red Heather, and at the six furlongs the leaders were Heisler, Red Heather, Oriflamb and After Ten. Going to the far turn Troilus and Antrim Boy were creeping up, and at the top the order was Heisler, Oriflamb, After Ten and Antrim Boy. Heisler, Antrim Boy and After Ten were in line at the last jump, but in the run home Antrim Boy came away to win decisively by a couple of lengths from Heisler, with Troilus about three lengths away. Oriflamb, Exide, Whiffler and After Ten were bunched just behind the third horse. The extra weight told on Mime at his fences, and Heisler’s rider obviously had instructions to test him out early. Antrim Boy had dropped considerably in the weights since his accident at New Year, and he is likely to win again. D. Hall, rider of Mime, sustained a double fracture of his left leg, being hit by his own horse as he fell in front, and being tapped when on the ground by one of the following runners. Noteworthy was made a pronounced favourite for the Claremont Hack Handicap, with the Samson bracket (which included Jock o’ Hazeldean) slightly better backed than Quinopal. Quinopal was disinclined to join the field at the barrier, but Miss Nightraid gave no trouble. The start was a ragged one, Miss Nightraid, Ballance and Miss Marco all getting away badly. Kentish Lady, Colonel Quex and Quinopal were first to begin, and at the end of a furlong Colonel Quex was showing the way to Kentish Lady, Noteworthy and Quinopal. Racing round the top the leaders were Colonel Quex, Kentish Lady, Noteworthy, Jock o’ Hazeldean, Double Soult. Colonel Quex, Kentish Lady and Noteworthy were fighting it out half a furlong from home, with Kentish Lady apparently going best, but Colonel Quex hung on best and won by a short half length from Kentish Lady, with Noteworthy another short half length away. Miss Marco finished fast a neck behind the third horse, beating Quinopal and Jock o’ Hazeldean. This was the first win for Colonel Quex, who is trained by R. C. Keeper. Jock o’ Hazeldean’s backers shared in the winning -dividend. Hoylake was struck out of the South Canterbury Handicap, leaving a field of half a dozen, over which betting was well distributed. Topere, who had lightened up with racing, was first selection, 235 units above Buoyant, with Taboo next in demand. A quick start was made, from which Mount Boa was slightly slower than the others. Buoyant, Tardy, Topere and Stealth all began smartly, and were running in that order at the end of a furlong. Passing the five-furlong post Buoyant was two or three lengths in front of Tardy and Topere, with Stealth and Mount Boa a! couple of lengths further back. Buoyant led Topere and Tardy to the far turn, where Mount Boa ran up. and half way round the curve Mount Boa had joined Topere in the lead, with Tardy still at the head of the others. At the top of the straight Stealth joined in and momentarily seemed to head Buoyant,, who had shaken off Mount Boa. Buoyant had his head in front again a hundred yards from home, but Stealth finished the better and secured the verdict by half a length. Taboo, who was last at the back, finished well two lengths or more away, and beat Topere by a length for third money. Mount Boa was fifth. Stealth was ridden on Saturday by L. Woolford, who seemed to get more out of him than the other apprentice who had ridden him lately.

The withdrawal of Solmuri left the Juvenile Handicap to two-year-olds, of which eight were saddled. Adelphi was a good favourite, showing 420 units more than Appeal, who was slightly better backed than Ball Dress. Sleipner, Palada and Totolomai began best, the slow ones being Ball Dress, Pink Paper and Palmary. Totolomai soon lost her place, and at the top Sleipner was leading from Appeal and Palada, with Pink Paper, Adelphi and Ball Dress following at intervals. Sleipner turned for home with a commanding lead, and a furlong from the finish was three lengths ahead of Pink Paper and Palada. Sleipner was not troubled to win by a couple of lengths, but there was an exciting finish for the minor places. Pink Paper was still second two strides from the wire, but Adelphi and Ball Dress both finished fast on the outside, and on the line their order changed to Ball Dress, Adelphi and Pink Paper, with noses between them. Appeal was a fair fifth. Sleipner in the past had always stopped badly at the end of half a mile, and that his win at six furlongs was not generally anticipated, was indicated by the posting of a double figure dividend. The Opihi Trot was an excellent betting race, Graclle 805, Le Thorpe-Lady Antrim 713, Bessie Huon 550, Pink Sugar 491, Myra Locanda 460, and June Nordica 410 being the most fancied candidates. Gracile broke at the start, and her backers were quickly out of suspense, and Upstart and King Abdallah also failed to go on. Hakari led down the straight from June Nordica, Bessie Huon, Jessie Huon and Hilda Orton, Le Thorpe and Lady Antrim being close up. When the six furlongs was reached, Hakari was still in charge from June Nordica, Bessie Huon, Jessie Huon, Le Thorpe and Lady Antrim, the lot being fairly well bunched There was then a quick change, broke and dropped out, and Le Thorpe and Lady Antrim went up fast on the outside. Bessie Huon was in front for a short distance, but soon gave way to

Jessie Huon, who led to the straight from Le Thorpe and Lady Antrim. Hakari, who lost a good deal of ground by his break, was coming on again, and half way 'down the straight he ran into second berth. Jessie Huon held her place to the end, winning by nearly three lengths from Hakari, who beat Le Thorpe by over two lengths. Pink Sugar was close up fourth, and Bessie Huon fifth. The pace was not so fast as in Thursday’s race, when Jessie Huon went about 3.30 2-5, and could finish only fourth. Tariff was a pronounced favourite for the Trial Handicap, over 500 chances in better demand than Fair Money, who was a hundred units above Valuator. The Dove, Punchestown and Valuator were quickest away, the favourite, who was on the outside, being last to move. Tariff soon raced round the field, and half way round the bend he was leading from Fair Money, Night Parade and The Dove. Tariff and Fair Money led The Dove and Night Parade into the straight, but the first two stopped quickly, leaving The Dove in charge from Punchestown, who had travelled very fast from the rear. Punchestown soon collected The Dove, and came on to win by a couple of lengths from Valuator, who was a length ahead of Solmuri. Taragona was a couple of lengths further back. Punchestown was one of the quick beginners, but he lost his place after going a furlong, and was a long way behind the leaders when he commenced his run.

Gay Crest and Fair Exchange, who had run first and second in a corresponding event on Thursday, were again entrusted with the public confidence in the Kingsdown Handicap. Fair Exchange and Straightcourse were smartest, and Sailing Home slowest, to move. Fair Exchange led up the back from Revision and Straightcourse, Courtlike leading the others until the far turn was reached, where Crossbow ran into fourth place. At the top of the bend Fair Exchange held an advantage of three lengths from Straightcourse, Revision and Crossbow, with Gay Crest working his way forward. Fair Exchange was joined by Straightcourse soon after the straight was entered and they looked like fighting it out, but Gay Crest overhauled them fast. Just as Straightcourse had worried Fair Exchange down, Gay Crest challenged, and with a determined finish, got up to win by a head. Fair Exchange was half a length behind Straightcourse, with Courtlike fourth, three lengths away. There were only six starters in the Farewell Handicap, and the pool was smaller than usual. Arrowmir 1705, Gay Sonnet 1456 and Solgele 927 carried the bulk of the investments. Arch Arrow, Solgele and First Raid were first away, but when the far turn was reached Solgele, Gay Sonnet, Arch Arrow was the order. Then Arrowmir moved up and led round the curve from Gay Sonnet and Solgele. Arrowmir retired at the top of the straight in favour of First Raid and Gay Sonnet, with Ace of Hearts going well on the outside. Emerson waited on First Raid until just before the post was reached, then he shot Gay Sonnet to the front and won by a neck from Arch Arrow, who flashed up on the outer rail and beat First Raid by a head. Ace of Hearts was two lengths away. Gay Sonnet went down more freely in her preliminary than on the first day, and as she was one of the last to move there was a lot of merit in her win, but she was perhaps lucky to defeat Arch Arrow, who would have headed her in another couple of strides. Both Nightmarch and Chide are engaged in the Chipping Norton Stakes to be run at Warwick Farm next Saturday. The other entrants Include Amounis and Phar Lap. HOOTS FOR NIGHTMARCH.
