JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. The South Canterbury boys’ and girls’ junior championships were concluded on Saturday in dull but fine weather. The standard of play in the preliminary rounds was well up to that of previous years, and it was anticipated that the finals in each section would be keenly contested. Such proved to be the case, and the large number of spectators who visited the Timaru Club’s courts, were privileged to witness what, for young players, must be regarded as first-class tennis. The finalists in the girls’ section were Misses S. Gillanders and M. Bridges. From the outset both displayed steadiness, and the match was characterised by several splendid rallies. The championship was won by Miss Gillanders 3-6, 6-5, 4-6. In the boys’ section, F. Green and N. Nicoll fought out the final, the former winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Both players were nervous at the start, but, when they settled down, played good tennis. Nicol, who was inclined to slice his drives, had Green in trouble for a period, but when he became accustomed to the spin on the ball he succeeded in holding his own. Nicol took the second set, but fell away badly in the final set, failing to win a single game.
