SOCIAL NOTES.

Mrs A. E. Muir. Sarah Street, left on Saturday to spend a few days in Geraldine.

Miss Gillies will arrive to-day to be the guest of Miss Fussell, Russell Square, for a few days. Mrs James Hay, of Christchurch, will arrive to-day to stay with Mrs W. H. Walton, Park Lane.

Mrs Arthur Nichols, of Kureheka, is the guest of her mother, Mrs W. H. Hargreaves, of Kakahu. Mr and Mrs Gerald Murray “Benmor,” are spending a few. days in Timaru.

Miss Jessie Eliot, Wellington, who is the guest of Mrs F. J. Rolleston, Le Cren’s Terrace, will leave for the north to-day.

Mrs E. J. Parrott. Christchurch, returned north yesterday, after spending a few days with Mrs W. D. Campbell, Wai-iti Road.

Miss P. C. Wright, Christchurch, who spent the week-end with Miss M. Hay, Hampton House, returned to the north yesterday. Mrs Malcolm Powrie, Christchurch, who has been staying with Mrs F. C. May, Temuka, returned home yesterday.

Mr and Mrs Robin Harper, Four Peaks, have returned home after spending a few days with Mr and Mrs Hamilton Sinclair-Thomson.

Mr and Mrs D. C. Macfarlane and family, of North Canterbury, have returned home, after spending a few days with Mr W. R. McLaren, “Montere” Seddon Street.

A delightful cabaret party at the Broadway Cabaret on Saturday night made a fitting wind-up, after the races. The room was charmingly arranged with flowers to match the colour scheme, and quite a number of dancers were present, including Miss Rona Elworthy, Mary and Rosamond Rolleston, Betty, Janet and Nan Cossins, Betty Harper, Betty Crawford, Jessie Eliot (Wellington), Rosa Tripp, Mr and Mrs Robin Harper, Mr and Mrs H. SinclairThomson, and Messrs H. Elworthy, G. Larsen, C. Batchelor (Dunedin), L. and G. Chapman, D. Studholme, G. Burdom, J. Acland, Commander D. Boyle and Lord Waleran.

Mrs G. Dunnett and Mrs W. Trott entertained a number of lady friends at the latter’s home at Seadown on Thursday afternoon the occasion being a gift afternoon for the work stall in aid of the forthcoming carnival to be held in the Seadown School. The dining room was decorated with blue hydrangea, sweet peas and roses. Mrs Trott received her guests wearing a blue spotted crepe de chene frock, and Mrs Dunnett wore, brown flowered crepe de chene. A competition w T as won by Miss K. Southward, of Christchurch. Among those present were Mrs R. J. Edgar, Mrs Gillies. Mrs J. Southward. Mrs F. Smith, Mrs Merthens, Mrs Brosnahan and Betty Brosnahan, Mrs Hughes, Mrs Cain, I Mrs Cargo, Mrs E. All roads led to the Washdyke Racecourse on Saturday for the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. The browns, tans, and fawns of autumn were popular colours, with one or two gay little felt hats in scarlet, green or orange to lighten the sobriety. J WEDDINGS. A wedding recently solemnised at St. John’s Church, Wellington, was that of

Elsie, third daughter of Mr and Mrs C. W. Barker ,of Berhampore, and James Burton, elder son of Mr and Mrs W. E. Boys of Temuka. The Rev. R. J. Howie officiated.

The bride, who was accompanied by her father, wore a frock of ivory satin, with a fiVng bodice and long flared skirt. The only trimming was a large bow on the hip, centred with a pearl ornament. Her long veil was simply arranged with sprays of orange blossom, and her bouquet was of cream and pale pink roses. The three bridesmaids were sisters of the bride —Jean (chief), who wore a frock of lettucegreen mariette, and Margaret and Doris, who wore apricot mariette. Each had a large picture hat to tone with her frock, and carried a bouquet of pink roses. Mr Ken Bezzant was best man.

The wedding reception was held at the Masonic Hall, Berhampore, where above 200 guests were entertaind. Mrs C. W. Barker received the guests wearing a frock of chenille velvet, and a pan velvet hat, her bouquet being of red roses. Mrs W. E. Boys, was in beige mariette and lace, with a bouquet of apricot roses and a summer felt hat trimmed with velvet and brilliant buckle. An enjoyable dance was held after the reception. Later the bride and bridegroom left for the north, the bride travelling in a powder-blue mariette frock, a grey satin coat trimmed with fur, a small grey felt hat and a crocodile felt hat and a crocodile bag to tone.
