SOCIAL NOTES

Mr J. E. Henrys, Auckland, is staying at the Grand.

Mr A. G. Copeland. Sydney, motored to the Grand for a short visit. Mr K. J. Fulton, Dunedin, is at the Grand for a brief visit. Mrs G. Rich. “The Rock.” Cave, has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs A. J. Hamilton, of Christchurch, are the guests of Mrs A. McClintock, Glen-iti. Mr and Mrs Godfrey Hall motored from Horarata to spend a few days at the Grand.

Mr and Mrs G. Handley, Wanganui, motored to the Grand for a short holiday.

Mr S. Howarth has arrived at the Grand, and will be in Timaru for a short period. Mr and Mrs Frank Reading. Wellington, who spent a few days at the Grand left yesterday for Dunedin.

Miss Ransoine. Hampton House, LeCren’s Terrace, left yesterday on a visit to Tekapo. Mr and Mrs J. Priest, Trafalgar Street, have returned from a visit to the North Island. Mrs Henry Reid and Miss Edna Reid, have returned to Dunedin after a visit to Mias E. Howden, Park Lane.

Mrs George Gould, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp, Silverton. Woodbury, for the races. Mr and Mrs T. Phillips, Windwhistle, accompanied by Miss D. N. Richards, Fendalton, motored to the Grand for a few r days. Mrs H. E. Shacklock and Mrs D. J. Calderare are holidaying at the Grand and expect to return to Dunedin this week-end.

Miss Peggy Chapman, Salisbury, has returned from a short visit to her brother. Mr L. Chapman, Dunglass, Cattle Valley.

Mrs G. Mcßae. Featherstone, who has been staying with her sister, Mrs C. E. Kerr. “Athlone,” Kingsdown, returned north on Thursday. Mr Lance Lewin, Christchurch, w'ill arrive to-day to spend the week-end with Dr. and Mrs F. R. A. Ulrich, Elizabeth Street.

The Hon. Mrs Ralp Vane. England, who has been staying with Mrs Norman Hope, The Grampians, has left for the North Island. Miss Mary Holmes, who has been staying with her aunt, Mrs C. C. Paterson. Wai-iti Road, has returned to her home in Auckland. Messrs W. G. and E. J. Menlove, Athol, accompanied by Miss C. Beckwith, Sydney, and Mr G. W. Cunningham, Five Rivers, have arrived by motor at the Grand for a brief stay. The engagement is announced of Cassie. niece of Mr and Mrs P. O’Boyle, Seadown, to John Bernard, only son of Mr J. and the late Mrs Healey, Levels Valley.

Mrs Sefton Adams, Hutt, Wellington. who is the guest of Mrs R. F. Hill, Mere Mere Street, will leave on Monday to stay with Mrs J. Peter, Geraldine.

Miss Wyn-Williams, Christchurch, who has been spending a few days with Mrs Ehvorthy. Pareora Cottage, LeCren’s Terrace, will return north to-day.

Miss Elsie Payne. “Walsingham,” Lincoln, and Miss Freda Franks, Sockburn. who have been spending a holiday in Dunedin, are at present staying in Timaru as the guests of Mrs W. Trott.

Mr and Mrs Hullah, have taken the Misses Buchanan's house in Christchurch during the latter’s stay in Orari. That the Otipua Women’s Institute l.as lost none of its popularity was .howm by the large number of membens who attended the meeting on I Wednesday, the birthday of the branch. After the routine business had been disposed of. Miss Withell (president) asked Miss Cumming, of Timaru. to give an address. Miss Cumming’s subject w r as gardening. and after a very interesting talk on rose culture, she gave a practical demonstration on pruning and budding at this time of the year.. This should prove most helpful, and a hearty vote of thanks w’as passed to Miss Cumming. Mrs B. Evans, hon. secretary, of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, upoke briefly re the newlyformed division, and invited the members of the institute to a picnic in the Park. One competition for the day was musical parcels, and was won by Mrs Tate. Another “Sing, Say, or Pay,” caused much merriment, and added to the funds for the institute. Afternoon tea was provided by the

retiring committee. This included a very fine birthday cake, which w r as cut by the president. Mrs Selwyn Withell. Otipua, and Miss Daniel, Kingudown, were weir corned as new members. Singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a very enjoyable meeting.
