SPORTING.

S.C.J.C. MEETING. I CARD FOR TO-DAY. The S.C.J.C. autumn meeting will be concluded to-day. the opening event being timed to begin at noon. Trains will leave Timaru for the racecourse at 11.5 and 12.10, and the same railway timetable will be in operation as on Thursday, the special arrangements covering Christchurch, Oamaru, Fairlie. Waimate and all intermediate stations. The fields will probably include several horses which were not started on Thursday, the new acceptors being Oriflamb, Troilus, Jock o’ Hazeldean, Noteworthy. Taboo, Hilda Orton, Myra Locanda, king Abdallah, Pink Sugar, Lady Antrim. Ball Dress, Semper Paratus. and Straightcourse, the lastnamed three hailing from Sir G. Clifford's stable. These horses will introduce fresh factors into the calculations of investors, and another point worth remembering is that several runners on the first day suffered considerably in uneven despatches. The presence of Oriflamb and Troilus will lend new interest to the hurdle race, in which Mime’s runaway win on Thursday has been recognised by a substantial rise. Mime will meet Heisler on 2Qib, Antrim Boy on 221 b, and Whiffler on 231 b worse terms, and the "extra poundage will steady him at his fsnres. Heisler has 151 b less than he •arried into second place on the first day, and is certain to be well backed. Taboo is the newcomer in the South Canterbury Handicap, but does not

appeal so much as Topere. When Taboo administered a neck defeat to Toperc at Oamaru, he was conceding 121 b, and in to-day’s race there is 241 b between them. Hoylake declined to try on Thursday, and is a bad horse to follow, and Topere’s most dangerous opponent may be Buoyant. Gay Sonnet did not hit out at all j freely on Thursday, and with the prospect of firm going again to-day, she may feel the ground. Flying Handicap ! running points to Arrowmir, who has | developed unlooked-for consistency | lately, being supported in the Farewell Handicap, with First Raid most likely of tho remainder.

Noteworthy. Jock o’ Hazeldean and Quinopal may attract the public’s fancy in the Claremont Handicap. Jock o’ Hazeldean has won only two small events, and has a big weight, but he is a very promising youngster. Quinopal failed to see out a mile on Thursday, but he will do better at seven furlongs and is meeting weaker opposition.

The eight acceptors in the Juvenile Handicap include seven two-year-olds. Adelphi. Ball Dress end Pink Paper may bo the best of them.

Gay Crest, after boring out badly, won the Kerrytown Handicap decisively. and a rise of 91b is not excessive. Fair Exchange has gone up a pound for his second, and should account for the remainder.

In the Trial Handicap, Tariff and Valuator did best on the first day, and their chief danger seems likely to come from a recovery of form by Fair Money. Bessie Huon has gone back only 12 yards for her second in the trotting event, and Gractle’s handicap has not been disturbed, so that they will be well supported. Le Thorpe would have been closer up on the first day but for a break at the top. and Pink Sugar will provide new and strong opposition. The card is as follows:

NO LICENSE FOR GRAY. A.J.C. DECLINES APPLICATION. (United Press Association—By Electrl< Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received April 4, 8.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 4. The Australian Jockey Club advise having received Hector Gray’s application for a jockey’s license, and that it was not granted. No reasons were furnished. Hector Gray was disqualified ior five years about 1914, as a result of the running at Hawkesbury of the Australian Cup winner Walalo. Since then the A.J.C. has steadfastly refused to grant him a license. A proposed trip to Randwick some years ago—prior to his disqualification by the C.J.C. —was abandoned on this account, and no great surprise will be expressed in many quarters at the rejection of his latest application. Had Gray received a ticket, it is understood he would have ridden for W. Booth, one of the leafing Sydney trainers.
