AMATEUR ATHLETICS. The Waimate Athletic Association is to present a most attractive programme on Saturday, April 19th. Amongst the entrants in the cycling events will be Grose and O'Brien, first i and second respectively in the recent New Zealand championships, at Wanj ganui. The pedestrian competitors in- ; elude Barnes (mile champion of Can--1 terbury) and Cordery (Canterbury j sprint champion). Miss Martyn will ; endeavour to lower the 100 yards ladies record for New Zealand, of 11 l-ssec. The events include a 440 yards and 120 , yards hurdle handicap, as well as high and long jump handicaps. HOOK GYMKHANA. j ; A meeting was held in the Hook Soli diers’ Memorial Hail on Thursday j night for the purpose of finalising j arrangements in connection with the Easter Monday gymkhana. Mr H. G. Rathgen presided over a very good attendance. It was decided that the programme for the day’s proceedings be formulated on the lines of last year’s events. Mr J. j Simmons was tendered a vote of thanks for his offer to provide sheep for the dog trials. I HOSPITAL COMMITTEE. At the meeting of the Waimate Hospital Committee of Management there I were present Mr W. Geddes (chair- ! mam, G. Dash, T. Brown. J. T. Hay, J. I I. Hayman. A. Grant, R. H. White, and R. Sinclair. The chairman stated that receipts I for the past month had been £257 1 14 10, and accounts presented for payi ment £630 10 - | The return of patients showed that , a total of 55 males and 39 females had ; been treated during March. There was i at the end of the month 26 males and 1J females in the hospital, against 11 1 males and 14 females at the beginning | The collective days’ stay was 1044 days, j the average number of patients per ! day being 33.6. The total days’ stay 1 for the year ending March 31st was ; 16.541. making the average number of j patients per day 45.3. Correspondence. The South Canterbury Hospital ; Board wrote stating that its next meeting, on April 15, would be held in Waimate. The Board also intimated that the Minister of Health had approved the ' appointment of Miss S. F. Farquhar as I matron at Waimate hospital. I A telegram was read from Miss 1 Farquhar advising she would take up duty on April 16th. Superintendent’s Report. i The Superintendent (Dr Pitts) reported that the work of the hospital had gone on smoothly during March. Three fever cases were in hospital. Dr Kidd had visited the institution the previous day, and the arrangement of the doctor calling on his way to Timaru was proving very satisfactory. The report was approved. House Committee. The House Committee reported that the new office and store was now near- ! ing completion. It was recommended ! that the asphalt paths, etc., be topI dressed. Six pigs had been sold for £26,5/-. The five remaining would be ! needed for use at the hospital.—The i report was adopted. Financial Position. ! Mr Dash, chairman of the Finance Committee, reported that the financial year had concluded satisfactorily. The excess of receipts over the estimates had more than covered the excess of i expenditure by £3OO. In addition, a new i office and store had been allocated for. ! The financial statement showed main- j tenance for the year ended March I 31st to have cost £7719. compared with j an estimate of £7400. and actual costs of £7222 and £7326 in 1927-23 respectively. Capital expenditure amounted j to £350 10 5, the estimate being £6OO.
