At the hearing the recent trial of Mr A. B. Fall in the district of Columbia Supreme Court, on a charge of having accepted bribes, Dr Johnson was quoted to some purpose. The prosecutor, Mr Pomerene, recalled Johnson,s saying that patriotism “is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” Counsel for the defence, Mr Hogan, at once jumped to his feet and replied, “Yet this Englishman vilified American revolutionaries and advised that Washington should be hanged at the yard-arm.”
