TEMUKA.

HOCKEY DANCE. A jolly little dance, organised by the Temuka Ladies’ Hockey Club, was held on Wednesday evening. a very large crowd of visitors being present. These included representatives from Christchurch. Timaru. Levels. Washdyke. Geraldine, and Orari. The committee, which consisted of Mrs J. Fisher. A. Hannifin, M. Hannifin. C. Hope and D. Webb (acting secretary) completed each detail in a most satisfactory manner, and are to be congratulated on the success of their first dance of the season.

A Monte Carlo dance and a Lucky spot waltz were held, the latter being won by Miss C. Hope and Mr D. South. Following were amongst the many present:—Mesdames De Renzy, J. Fisher. W. Excellent dance music was supplied by a Timaru orchestra, while Mr W. Seeler was M.C.

800 VISITORS TO-DAY. About 650 adults and children are ex- j pected to attend the annual picnic of i the Timaru West School, which will be | held in the Temuka Domain to-day. The Bank Street Methodist Sunday School also will avail themselves of the facilities provided by the Domain for their annual outing. FAREWELL TO NURSE ALLAN. Under the auspices of the Temuka and Pleasant Point Sub-branches of the Plunket Society, a social was tendered by mothers of the district to Nurse Allan on the occasion of her I departure. This was largely attended, giving direct evidence of the esteem in which Nurse Allan has been held. The proceedings were interspersed by vocal and elocutionary items, and afternoon tea was dispensed by the members of the committee. The chair was occupied by the Mayoress (Mrs T. Gunnion), who was supported by Mrs Paterson, retiring president, and Mrs Brodie. acting-president and Mrs Benham. president of the Pleasant Point sub-branch.

A letter of apology was read from Mrs G. W. Armitage, a former president. who expressed her appreciation of Nurse Allan's work for the mothers and babies of the district, and offered her good wishes for her next undertaking. Opportunity was taken to present to Nurse Allan, a handsome inscribed handbag, which contained a substantial amount in notes. The presentation was made by Mrs Douglas Paterson, who referred to the wonderful work achieved during the sojourn of the nurse in Temuka.

Mrs Benham spoke on behalf of Pleasant Point, and other speakers paid similar tributes. Nurse Allan, in reply, thanked the mothers for their generous gifts and their co-operation during her term of office.

Miss McClury, the newly-appointed nurse was welcomed by Mrs Brodie.

Bouquets were presented by Flora Jean Brodie and Barbara Tully to the Mayoress, Nurse Allan and Nurse McClury.

Through the courtesy of Mrs Mclnnes, the remaining cakes were taken to the Bramwell Booth Boys’ Home.

BOWLING. The Temuka Bowling Club held a progressive pairs tourney on Thursday afternoon, in which 24 players took part. The winning skip was T. Edwards who had 3i wins, and F. A. Joynt won the leads’ prize with four wins. The semi-final game in the Club champion pairs was played between O. Connolly and T. Edwards (s) and A. Meek and F. Smith (2). The play was even for the first nine heads, when the score was 9 all. In the succeeding six heads, Smith and Meek added 14 to the total, the board reading Smith 23, Edwards 9. On the sixteenth head, Smith failed to score again, and in the next five heads, Edwards played some wonderful shots. When the skips went to the mat on the twenty-first head, Smith was three up on the board, and was three up on the head. With his four bowls, Edwards drew three on to the jack and Smith overran the head, with each of his bowls. In an extra and deciding head, Edwards scored one point, and the final scores were Edwards 24, Smith 23.

Connolly and Edwards will now meet White and Hunt in the final.

GARDEN PARTY. A successful garden afternoon was held on Thursday at the residence of Mr and Mrs D. Bryan, Gammack Street. The weather was fine and warm, and this tempted many to spend an afternoon amidst ideal surroundings. The Ladies’ Guild, under the guidance of the president (Mrs J. Duncan), was responsible for the organisation of the event, and they are to be congratulated on the successful result. A small band, under Mr S. Cross, added to the enjoyment of the company. Good business was done by a needlework stall (Mrs Maddren and Mrs Trigance). and by a cake and sweet stall (under Mrs Burboroueh). Whilst afternoon tea was being served, the Rev. A. Blakemore exprpSvSed the thanks of the Guild to all who had helped towards the success of the function. A programme of competitions was carried out by Mrs P. Thomas, assisted by Miss E. Bryan and Miss I. Hewson. The financial result of the effort will be about £ls. PERSONAL. The Mayor, Mr T. E. Gunnion, and Major D. White, will leave Temuka today for Mayfield. Mr H. J. Priestly left Temuka yesterday for Hastings, where he will Join

the staff of the District High School. Mr K. E. G. Archer, of Cnnst- ] church, was in Temuka yesterday ! Baptist young men’s camn. which will be held in Temuka at Easter. Mr J. G. Ritchie, manager of the , Island yesterday. Miss Edna Hughes, of the North | Island, is the guest of Mrs T. Edwards. Miss P. Stephenson left Temuka yesterday for Christchurch. NOTES. In order to test the new water supply for fire-fighting purposes, the | Fire Brigade will give demonstration at | 7.30 on Monday evening. The first test will be at Gapper and Sheen's corner, where there is a 6-inch main, and further experiments will be made at other points in the Borough.

1.0.0. F. The fortnightly meeting of the IO O.F. Lodge was held on Tuesday, Bro. T. Wallace, N.G. presiding over a large attendance. Accounts amounting to £3B/15/6 were passed for payment. Three candidates were proposed for membership, and tivo were balloted for and elected. Bro. J. Davis and Bro. B. Maclachlan were appointed delegates for the Friendly Societies’ card tournament. Receipts of the evening' amounted to £l4/10/9. There being no further business, the lodge closed in due form, after which a social hour w r as spent. PICTURES TO-NIGHT. An exceedingly deft and skilful combination of action and romance affords audiences at Temuka to-night with a glorious tale of adventure in Tim McCoy’s latest Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production, “The Desert Rider.’ The picture opens with breath-taking action in which a young and gallant pony express rider is held up and robbed of a land deed which forces a beautiful senorita on the mercy of a friendly mission. A charming love theme is Interwoven throughout the story, and Raquel Torres as the heroine aids greatly the superb quality of the romance. Comedy relief is supplied by Bert Roach, who portrays a fat but perpetually hungry Friar, while the heavy role is capably handled by Harry Woods. Edward Connelly. Jess Cavln and others of note appear in the cast. Excellent supporting pictures are also 1 to be screened.
