“ AIMING AT THE IDEAL.”

SINGLE WOMEN’S COMPETITION. | Great interest was evinced at the j Orari Horticultural Show on Thurs- i day in the single women’s competition for a prize of £3O, donated by Mr T. ■ D. Burnett, M.P. The result was announced on Thursday evening by Mr W. E. Cook, , president of the Society, the winner being Miss K. McKenzie, “Stover, ] Geraldine. The marks for the first three competitors were:— 1 Miss K. McKenzie (Geraldine) . 176.9 | Miss M. Vincent (Geraldine) . 172.0 j Miss M. Bolitho (Orari) 160.0 This year, Mr Burnett’s competition : took a unique form, in that he aimed at finding an ideal type of woman, i To do this, he offered £3O as a single | prize in a competition for single ; women who fulfilled the conditions he set out. These conditions were based | j on the qualities that are necessary to - ! make the ideal citizen, wife and : i mother. Each candidate had to pass ; ; an examination by two of the follow- ; ing doctors: Drs. Hislop, Mail, or j Curtis, Geraldine, who awarded marks ! according to the physical development j of each candidate. Each also had to ■ write an essay on child welfare, show- j ing a knowledge of development of | character, from infancy to leaving j school. The next two conditions were f [ that they should enter exhibits in the ■ cookery and sewing sections at the ; Horticultural Society's show, marks j being given according to the number , !of prizes each won. Every candidate ; ! had then t-o answer a test on their ! knowledge of stock. this taking the form of recognising from photographs I the best known breeds of animals in , common use in New Zealand. The final condition was that each should attend the Orari Horticultural Show. In announcing the result. Mr Cook ! apologised for the unavoidable absence | of Mr T. D. Burnett that night, and 1 expressed the Society’s thanks to Mr Burnett for the keen interest he took lin the Society. Such were Mr ; Burnett’s good wishes that he had i offered a further sum of £3O for a l similar competition next year. I Dr. Derrick, who judged the essay, 1 wrote expressing appreciation of the high merit shown by the competitors, ; specially mentioning those of Misses McKenzie and De Latour, who scored respectively 85 and 80 per cent, of the essay marks. In the physical development section. Misses McKenzie and Vincent scored the highest marks. Miss May Bolitho was awarded full marks in the cookery section, and Miss Vincent full marks in the sewing classes. In the stock judging, Miss Bennett obtained full marks, recognising all the animals photographed, while Miss Pemberton was a close second.
