A keen easterly wind prevailed at Riccarton to-day, but conditions otherwise were excellent for the summer fixture of the C.J.C. The attendance was slightly above the average. The Midsummer Handicap was won by the three-year-old Waterline, who made his first appearance only a month ago at Trentham. Sir George Clifford was credited with a second win later in the day by Full Feather, who has just about lived down his reputation for showing the. white feather. Another Christchurch owner who had two winning representatives was Mr G. Gerard, whose team had been out of luck for some time. The Middle Park Plate went to the little southern-owned filly, Charmaine, but it seemed that she was a bit lucky in defeating Aspiring, who was eased after passing the ordinary winning post and lost a little ground before her rider quickly realised his mistake. Marsham Breaks the Ice. There was a field of eleven for the Hornby Handicap, a high-weight event for horses ridden by jumping riders. As no approved horseman was available for Wrigley, the regulation 71b penalty was put up for C. Emerson. Marsham 705, Don Jose 620, and Quarterdeck 504 found most favour with investors. Haze and Gala Day took up the running from Chickwheat and Phastar, and at the end of two furlongs they had opened a gap of six lengths from Marsham. Racing round the top they were well clear from Marsham, who was showing daylight from Chickwheat and Gay Crest. Marsham closed on the leaders coming to the home turn, and at the top of the straight Haze and Marsham were in charge. Marsham soon drew away and won easily by three lengths or more from Quarterdeck, who came on the outside and defeated Chickwheat by a length for second money. Hounslow was a neck away. Marsham’s effort suggested further improvement, but Don Jose was never in the picture. The winner is a brother to The Cypher, and is one of the last of Martian’s progeny. Easy for Flair. There was a big field in the Trial Plate, for which Gay Crest was £lls In

better demand than Flair, with Tariff and Ravine both solidly supported. Fair Exchange, Tariff and Solgele were first to show, and at the far turn Solgele was just leading Fair Exchange and Tariff. Solgele led round the top from Tariff and Flair, with Fair Exchange piloting the others. Flair showed the way to the straight to Tariff and Fair Exchange, and stayed in front to win by a couple of lengths from Gay Crest, who got up to beat Fair Exchange by a neck. Swiftray, who ran a patchy race in the straight, was a bit over a length away, with Tariff, Tourist and Audience next. Flair, considering her good showing behind Pink Coat at Ashburton in the spring, returned a surprisingly good dividend. Miss Nightraid, Safety, Flaxbird and Ravine all began too badly to have much chance. Lucky Charmaine. The Southland two-year-old Charmaine was the popular selection for the Middlepark Plate, but there was plenty of backing for Asph ig, Inevitable, Blue Metal and Jaloux, the absence of any real top-notch pi* the event look more open than usual. Charmaine, from near the outside, began very quickly, and was soon put in front from Blue Metal and Aspiring. Aspiring challenged Charmaine soon after reaching the main course, but the two-year-old opened up a gap again, and two furlongs from home the order was Charmaine, Aspiring, Blue Metal, Inevitable, Jaloux. Aspiring made another effort at the first winning post and momentarily took charge, but Charmaine went on and secured the verdict by a neck, with Jaloux three lengths away. Blue Metal was fourth, a length further back, and Inevitable fifth. Charmaine, who is a sister to Rin Tin Tin, is small, but improves with each race. She is at present in E. J. Ellis’s charge, and is to remain at Washdyke until after Easter. Considering her big weight and that she had been under a cloud lately, Aspiring ran a fine race, and it was unlucky that C. Emerson mistook the winning post and thought he had won the race at that point. The rider realised his error at once, but the slight ease-up was fatal. Waterline Again. Pride was made a pronounced favourite for the Midsummer Handicap, nearly 800 units above Waterline, who was over 200 tickets better backed than Hoylake. Amor, Rapier and Topere moved out first, and Rapier (pulling hard) went on from Topere, Amor and Waterline. At the mile Rapier was half a length in advance of Topere, with Pride and Amor a couple pf lengths away, Waterline having dropped back to last. Rapier led Topere past the six furlongs, where Waterline commenced to move up again. At the top the leaders were Rapier, Topere and Waterline, but the lot were bunched fairly well. Hoylake made a dash on the outside after rounding the home turn, and at the top of the straight Waterline, Hoylake and Topere were fighting for the lead. Waterline and Hoylake drew away in the run home, and a good contest ended in Waterline defeating the grey by a neck. Topere was nearly two lengths away, a neck in front of Pride. Waterline has now won three times and finished third once in four starts, and he is likely to come into the discussions on the St. Leger. He is a big, long-striding galloper, but gives the impression that he will be a good stayer, and he is the best novice turned out from Chokebore for some time. Hoylake, nursed for a final run, performed more generously than usual, but Pride quite failed to distinguish herself. Speedy Spoon. Nine juveniles lined up for the Lyttelton Handicap, but only the Greenwood bracket (Praise-Ozone) 2036 and Winsome Hind 1302, were seriously considered by backers. Spoon jumped out smartly, and led on to the course proper well clear of Appeal, Winsome Hind and Weatherley. Spoon had the race won at the distance, where Winsome Hind also had drawn out from the others. Spoon won easily by three lengths from Winsome Hind, who was a couple of lengths in front of Ozone, with Praise a neck further back. Whatnot and Appeal were next. Spoon had raced consistently earlier in the season, finishing second three times, but this was her first win for Mr C. G. Dalgety, who intends to retire from racing in a couple of months. Pharaoh who has not long been in work, met with interference, but should be prominent later in the year. Four in the Craven. A disappointing field of four contested the Craven Plate. Red Heckle wound up favourite, over 900 tickets above Greenaway, but there was not much separating the other three runners. Silver Coot, Arrowmir and Greenaway moved off in that order with little between them, but at the top Silver Coot had established a lead of two lengths from Arrowmir, Red Heckle being last. Silver Coot was still well clear of Arrowmir and Greenaway at the home turn, but in the run to the judge he was challenged by Red Heckle, who had come out a bit wide. After a good race between the pair, Silver Coot ran under the wire a long neck in front of the favourite, who was four lengths ahead of Arrowmir. Greenaway was half a length further vback. A Noteworthy Dividend. The biggest field of the day took part in the Halswell Handicap, for which Te Awhina 676 was established a decided favourite. Ranelagh 931 was second choice, and Mount Boa 867 was well clear of the remainder. Te Awhina and Leader, who had drawn outside positions, began well, and with Sunny Pal, Quinopal and one or two others, contested the lead to the main course. Leader and Te Awhina were holding their own at the head of a bunch with two furlongs to go, when Noteworthy appeared on the outside,* and finishing full of running, the Paper Money gelding came right away to win by three lengths from Te Awhina, who was just over a length ahead of Mount Boa. Leader was a couple of lengths further back, then came Starshooter, Garvary and Quinopal. Ranelagh was never dangerous, and did not reproduce his Dunedin form. Noteworthy carried only £79, and returned a big dividend. Full Feather in the Mood. For the Post Handicap, the concluding event of the day, backers declared for Meprisant, Buoyant, Gay Crest and Full Feather in that order of preference. Sea Raid was first away, followed by Gay Crest and Courtlike, but she soon lost her place, and Gay Crest and Courtlike went on from Buoyant and The Bailiff. Racing round the curve, Courtlike and Gay Crest had gained an advantage of four lengths from Buoyant, and they were still in command when the straight was reached. Then the field closed up, and a bit further on Courtlike was beaten. Full Feather put in an appearance on the outside over a furlong from home, and running on generously, he wore Gay Crest down and won by a neck. The Bailiff was less than a length away, a neck in front of Master Clarence. Meprisant was never dangerous, and Buoyant failed to see the journey out. RANGITIKEI MEETING.
