FREE LABOUR ATTACKED.
FIERCE ENCOUNTER IN SYDNEY. (United Press Association—By Electrl# Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received, February 23, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, A number of free labourers, who had just been paid off at the Shipping Office, Newcastle, yesterday, were crossing a street when a unionist hurled a much used epithet, descriptive of his scorn for volunteer workers. Then trouble started. He was charged, and others joined, and almost instantly half a dozen free fights were in progress. The police arrived and made one arrest and restored peace for a time.
The crowds grew, however, evidently awaiting the next outbreak. This was not long in coming. A iow started in a hotel bar, and spread outside, and when a policeman arrested a man who appeared to be the principal in the affair, his sympathisers asked why a free labourer had not been taken too, and began to close in, threatening the police. Reinforcements arrived, and got their man to the station and arrested four others. The hotheads seemed inclined to rescue their mates from the lockup, but wiser counsels prevailed.
