Mr Fraser Mackenzie. Chief Government Valuer, who waa taken ill suddenly in Wellington last week, is progressing favourably. Major G. A. C. Taylor, of the Indian Army (retired), and Mrs Taylor are engaged on a motor tour of the North Island.

Mr W. Downie Stewart, M.P., formerly Minister of Finance, arrived from Wellington by the ferry steamer on Saturday, and went on to Dunedin.

Captain J. V. M. Canty. M.M.. of the Ist ’Battalion. Wellington Regiment, has been selected for service as platoon commander. with the Samoan Military Police.

The Rev. Father Buckley, of Auckland. has departed on a visit to Italy. He expects to be away for about six months, and hopes to attend the Eucharistic Conference at Carthage.

Dr. A. C. B. Biggs, of Balclutha, who has been appointed medical superintendent to the Napier Hospital, is expected to arrive in Napier early in March to take up his new position. A cable message from Washington announces that the retiring British Ambassador (Sir Esme Howard) sailed for England on Friday night on the liner Majestic.

Mr H. Westoby, « captain of the Canadian bowling team, is revisiting Wellington. He intends to tour the North Island, and leave again for Canada next month.

The Rev. G. Thorpe, rector of Lydford. the largest parish in England, which includes Dartmoor and its prison, is on a brief visit to New Zealand.

Mr R. D. Anstead, Director of Agriculture in Madras. India, arrived at Auckland last week, after a holiday visit to the Islands. He leaves Wellington by the Rotorua on March 18th, for England.

Mr D. Jones. M.P.. chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, will sail for London by the Rangitane on March 1. in connection with the board s shipping contract. Mr Thomas A. Duncan was appointed acting- . chairman during Mr Jones’s absence. While the Archbishop of New Zealand (Rt. Rev. W. A. Averill) is abroad for the Lambeth Conference, and a tour of Great Britain and the Continent, the office of Acting Primate will be held by the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. T. H. Sprott). Mr R. B. Teakle. general manager of Canadian National Steamships, •accompanied by the Company s New Zealand manager F. G. Wood), arrived in Timaru from Mount Cook on Saturday. They left Temuka by the second express en route for Wellington.

Mr Alfred Hill, the New Zealand composer, is at present in Auckland, arranging an authoritative musical setting for the film of Maori life which is to be made on the shores of Lake Taupo. He has been granted the necessary leave of three months or more from his duties at the New South Wales State Conservatorium.

Lord Latimer will arrive by the Tahiti from Sydney on Monday next to fish and stalk. Lord Latimer is a Bachelor of Arts. He was a captain in Royal North Devon Yeomanry, and served during 1915-17 in Gallipoli and Egypt with the second SouthWest Mounted Brigade. He was formerly a partner in th banking firm or Coutts and Co. The arrangements made include a visit to Taupo for a week’s fishing. Lord and Lady Latimer will then proceed to their deer stalking camp thirty miles into the hills from Makarora, amongst the wildest scenery and the best stalking obtainable. Their camp, w’hich is to be under the direction of Mr E. C. Wiffen, will be the last word in comfort. They will remain in camp* a month and will leave for Home on 26th April.

Messrs A. W. Louw and J. S. Bezuidenhant, South Africa, who have been in South Canterbury for some time studying the sheep, wool, and fat lamb industries here, will leave for Invercargill to-day. There they will spend a further week and will leave for Australia on March 3. From Melbourne. Mr Bezuidenhant will continue his yoyage straight through to South Africa. Mr Louw intends visiting Sydney, to further his studies at the Sydney Technical College. Both Mr Louw apd Mr Bezuidenhant have expressed the intention of returning to New Zealand at the end of the year. During the last fortnight the visitors stayed at the run of Dr. Matheson, Kurow. Their stay in New Zealand, they state, has been very pleasant, and they are high in their praise of the splendid hospitality extended to them.
