NEW LIFE FOR SKIN RUGS

GIVE THEM A LITTLE OIL. If your skin rug is losing its freshness or has become harsh and brittle so that the hair breaks easily, you may easily remedy the fault thus. Stretch the rug out, fix it on the table fur side downwards, and go all over the under side of the pelt with a cloth wrung out in warm water. Dry thoroughly. Now take a handful of French chalk and rub the powder v/ell into the skin with the finger tips, working as much into the pores as they will absorb.

Brush the whole of the skin to remove excess powder, then massage in a little warm olive oil. Use no more oil than is actually necessary to soften the pelt, rubbing it in vigorously so that it may penetrate and render the skin soft and pliable.

After allowing the oiled skin to dry overnight in a cool atmosphere, sprinkle on a little more French chalk to absorb the excess grease, brush off with a fairly stiff brush, and give a final wipe over with a clean, soft cloth.

The rug will now be soft and pliable, and the brittleness will have vanished. Of course, care should be taken that no oil reaches the furry side direct. Only the minutest quantity is needed by each hair, and this it absorbs through the skin.
