ENTERITIS IN POULTRY.

J ; Eenteritis may be caused by many dif- . ferent things. It may be bacterial, - arising out of unsanitary conditions in f which the bird is living. It may be - brought on by foul drinking water, - putrid meat, or decaying food of any y sort. It may be the result of poisoning - caused by the birds eating such things as lye, unslaked lime, salt, or if they 0 have had any access to any disinfectant mixture, rat poison, etc. A simple e diarrhoea may develop into an acute f enteritis if the environment is not _ favourable to healthy living. It is often e very difficult to determine just what ; is the exact cause of trouble in these d cases. If it can be determined is _ should, of course, be removed, but, fa.il--7m ing such, one should aim at ensuring _ that the birds be under the . best poss3, ible conditions, especially at regards ■_ cleanliness, wholesome food, and exerd cise. Houses and runs should be cleane ed out and. disinfected. Drinking vesy sels and food troughs should be scalded n daily, and it is usually recommended - G that potassium permanganate should is be used in the drinking water. A stock IX bottle of concentrated solution can be is kept, and sufficient of this added to the d, water, which, by the way, should be 3 f changed every day, to impart a port ie wine colour to it. It is also advisable )r to use a little powdered charcoal in the mash, and perhaps bran should be cut down and middlings increased.
