SHARKEY v. SCOTT. PREPARING FOR BIG BOUT. {United Press Association—By Electric Telesraph—Cooyrielit. ) NEW YORK, February 19. A message from Miami states that seven rounds of sparring with five different partners comprised the bulk of Phil Scott’s training session to-day. He weighed 2121 b. When the day’s work ended, Scott gave a “world champion touch” to the coming fight by announcing that he had retained “Wild Bill” Lyons as his bodyguard. Lyons served in this capacity with Jack Dempsey. Ten desultory rounds of sparring, which were marked by a slippery ring, engaged the attention of Sharkey. There was little fire in the performance, to which Pierre Charles and Johnny Grosso contributed. Their presence created the impression that Sharkey is already considered at the top of his form, and would be content merely to idle along until February 27. The fight between Scott and Sharkey will be the second big event that has been brought off at Miami, a fashionable winter resort- in Florida. The first was that between Sharkey and Stribling last winter, and was run by Jack Dempsey, who took it over on behalf of the Madison Square Corporation, on the sudden death of Tex Rickard. The coming contest, also promoted by the Madison Square Corporation, is not for the world’s championship, but it is quite possible that the New York Boxing Commission may decide that the winner may be matched against an approved opponent for the title. Both Sharkey and Scott are known as in-and-out fighters, one day brilliant and the next mediocre, but on public form they are undoubtedly at the head of the heavy-weight class. Should Scott prove successful great will be the rejoicing in British sports circles, as it is to Scott that England looks to regain the long-lost world’s championship.
