TIMARU AMATEUR CLUB RACE. The Timaru Cycling and Athletic Club held an open race last evening over a course of 24 miles from Maori Hill to Temuka Post Office and back. A large field of competitors faced the starter, and several showed very promising form. The roads were not in the best condition in parts, and a strong head wind faced the riders for a great part of the distance, but the times were excellent and equal to those of previous years. Several riders were unlucky, having to abandon the race through punctures and minor mishaps, but the contestants who finished rode well despite the conditions. The leaders arrived home in a bunch, and a closely-contested finish resulted in Burns gaining the decision over Woodham by about a length, with Loach close up third. The back markers rode well, but were able to make up only a small amount of their handicap. E. B. Taylor, the sole scratch man, put up a very creditable performance, in gaining fastest time after riding the entire distance by himself. The following were the placings:— R. Burns (4min) 59min 1 l-ssec .. 1 R. Woodham (4min) 59min 1 2-ssec 2 A. Loach (smin) 60min 1 3-ssec .. 3 E. B. Taylor (scratch), 57min 456ec gained fastest time.
