FIRST. TOURNAMENT TN SOUTH CANTERBURY. The first croquet tournament held in South Canterbury commenced yesterday morriner n'-der rM ” 4 ' O weather conditions. Though the sky was over-cast for the greater part of the day, no. rain fell, and play went steadily forward. The Timaru, Aorangi and Ashbury lawns, were the ones selected by the Committee on which the tournament games were to be played, and at nine o’clock yesterday morning, they presented an animated appearance with numerous contestants preparing for the fray. A and B grade matches were played on the Timaru and Aovangi lawns, and C grade matches at Ashbury. Play was continued until after six o’clock last night, and when the results were checked up tfaey presented few surprises. During the day the ladies at the three law-s dispe- • M light refreshment to the players. The matcTics will be continued to-day and to-morrow. Too much praise cannot be given to the Association's president (Mrs W. Taylor), the secretary (Mrs A. A. E. Pennefathsr), the official hendicapper (M* 11. Hall), and the official referee (M. A. G. Hart), for the splendid manner in which the torr” mv f has been organised in every detail, the handicaps being carefully thought out to give playeis as far as possible an even chance.
