FIRST. TOURNAMENT TN SOUTH CANTERBURY. The first croquet tournament held in South Canterbury commenced yesterday morriner n'-der rM ” 4 ' O weather conditions. Though the sky was over-cast for the greater part of the day, no. rain fell, and play went steadily forward. The Timaru, Aorangi and Ashbury lawns, were the ones selected by the Committee on which the tournament games were to be played, and at nine o’clock yesterday morning, they presented an animated appearance with numerous contestants preparing for the fray. A and B grade matches were played on the Timaru and Aovangi lawns, and C grade matches at Ashbury. Play was continued until after six o’clock last night, and when the results were checked up tfaey presented few surprises.
