NO AUSTRALIANS NEED APPLY.
FOR UNEMPLOYED RELIEF WORK. By T“1 eera*pb— Pres* Asaodatlop. WELLINGTON. February 20. “Charity begins at home.” This, in effect, is the policy of the Government, in regard to oversea labour offering in i New Zealand. When replying to a deputation today, the Minister of Labour (Hon. W. A. Veitch). said that the relations between Australia and New Zealand were most friendly, but when it came to a question of relief of unemployment. the Government of the latter country had a duty to its own people. It should be clearly understood that whatever was done in the way of relief was for New Zealanders only. Mr W. Nash. M.P.: “That ought to be said in London too.” ’ Mr Veitch said he agreed. The Minister’s remarks were prompted by a member of the deputation pointing out that Australians had applied for work on the Mt. Victoria tunnel.
