SILVER BAND. j On Wednesday night a large number I of people gathered at Victoria Park to ! witness the Silver Band’s final quickstep practice, prior to the contest at 1 Dunedin. The band was under the direction of Drum-Major L. V. Brenton ! and Bandmaster F. F. Vincent, and , gave evidence of marked improvement i in both drill and music. They were i heartily cheered for their performance. | The Band is to leave Waimate for Dunedin by the first express to-day. ; and will take part in the C. Grade j quickstep contest to-morrow morning. ! and the Test Selection in the evening, ; returning by the first express on i Monday.

PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs M. J. Corrigan and Miss May Corrigan are dpe to leave Waimate on March 10. on an extended tour of England, Ireland and the Continent. They will travel by the Panama route and after spending some time in England will return via the Continent. Suez and Australia. Whilst abroad Mr Corrigan will make a personal investigation of matters affecting New Zealand primary industries.

AMATEUR ATHLETICS. A general meeting of the Waimate Amateur Athletic Club was held on Wednesday right. The president (Mr L. F. Ensor > presided over a fair attendance of members. The programme for Easter Saturday was approved by the Cnterbury Centre as under:—Running: leu yards, 220 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards and one mile handicaps; 120 yards and 440 yards hurdles; relay race, obstacle race, one mile walk. Cycling events: —Half mile, one-and-a-half miles, two miles, and boys race (handicaps) and one mile scratch race. Field events:—Long jump, high jump. Ladies events: —Running: 100 yards and 120 yards handicaps. Officials were elected as follows: — Secretary, Mr Myles McDonald: treasurer. Mr A. Dobbs: Committee, Messrs S. J. Fitch, F. F. Simpson and J. S. Manchester; superintendent of sports, Mr Collins; handicappers:—Running and field events, Mr T. E. Parry: cycling. Mr T. Eade. Stewards: —Messrs S. I. Fitch, D. S. Chisholm, H. C. Foster. G. Aitken, J. P Mcßride. L. Milsom, T. A. Wilson, S. Rarellwood. ! and J. C. Hill. Timekepers:—Messrs C. Hood and R. Cameron. Record secretary Mr J. V. Trehse. The meeting decided to endeavour to arrange for the billeting of competitors from 'distant parts taking part in the sports.
