SWIMMING.
STAR CLUB CARNIVAL. On Saturday night the Star Swimming Club intend holding their annual swimming carnival at the Century Baths. A big contingent of visiting swimmers who competed successfully in the New Zealand swimming championships at Greymouth will make the fixture more interesting. Among these will be L. Moorhouse, back-stroke champion and New Zealand representative at the last Olympic games; S. Fogg, who will compete against Moorhouse; A. T. F. Stokes, Canterbury champion and runner-up to G. Bridson at this year’s championships; C. McConville, New Zealand intermediate free-style champion; J. O. Christchurch; A. Bolam, Christchurch, winner of three handicap events at Greymouth; and M. Souter, South Canterbury representative at the championships. Miss Doris Foote, New Zealand champion lady diver, Miss Olive Crowley and G. Staples will give exhibitions of diving as well as trying conclusions with local exponents. The South Canterbury champion, R. Sutherland, winner of last year’s intermediate championships over 220 and 440 yards, will swim against his 1929 opponent, M. Conville. Sixteen Ashburton swimmers, including Miss Doreen Smith, who finished second in the junior girls’ championship, nine Christchurch and six Dunedin swimmers are expected.
