ATHLETICS.
PELTZER AND LERMOND ARRIVE. By Telegraph —Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 4. In addition to Dr. Peltzer, the following athletes * arrived to-day:— Lermond (America), Golding (New South Wales)* Emton (Germany). Dr Peltzer will probably go on to Rotorua to-night and be back in Wellington for Saturday’s meeting, after which he and Emton will return to Germany via Australia, Java and India. Lermond and Golding will tour the Dominion, competing at meetings in various parts. Dr Peltzer, the German athlete, who arrived to-day, says athletics are only a recreation with him in Germany. He is lecturer in Economics, and when not on the running track in the countries he -is visit ing he is engaged analysing social conditions. He does not see much hope in Australia’s high tariff policy. They would, he said have to learn that they were not the world in themselves, i There should be a periodical survey of protected industries. The progress of industry, and general air of prosperity in Japan surprised him. The future seemed verybright. He considers free trade the only way the world can be made happy all round. His own country was labouring under extremely heavy taxation, in which all had to share.
