CHARGE OF MURDER.
MOB RUSH COURTHOUSE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received February 4, 7.55 p.m.) LONDON, February 4. William Podmore was committed for trial. An extraordinary scene was witnessed in the afternoon, when a big crowd, mostly women, overwhelmed the police and rushed the Courthouse, and for a brief space disorder interfered with the hearing of the case. [William Podmore was a witness at the inquest concerning the deat*h of Vivian Messiter, who was murdered at Southampton sometime after October 30, 1928. Podmore, whose statement to the police suggested that he was the last man to see Messiter alive, was arrested by Scotland Yard officers as he was leaving Wandsworth Prison on December 16. He was taken to Southampton, where he was charged with murder, and remanded. The body of Messiter was found inside a private garage at Southampton. The door was padlocked outside. Mr Messiter had been missing ten weeks. The theory of the police was that the murder was committed away from the garage and that the body was taken there subsequently. A post-mortem examination revealed the fact that death occurred two months before the discovery.]
