THIEVES DISTURBED

STOLEN CAR WRECKED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received February 4, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 4. In the early morning, a strange car was observed standing outside Woodhill’s store in a lonely part of Kurrajong. A policeman arrived on the scene, but the driver of the suspect, instead of obeying the call to stop, bore down on the constable with the evident intention of running over him, and he had to jump for his life. The stranger disappeared at breakneck 6peed and eventually crashed through a fence near Richmond.

The thieves, in an attempt to hide their tracks, then pushed the derelict down a side lane, but left a quantity of tobacco which is believed to have been stolen from the store. The police sought aid from the Richmond aerodrome, and two ’planes swept the locality, flying low, but saw no sign of the fugitives. This is the fifth robbery at Woodhill’s store in two years. The stolen car belonged to a resident of Mossman.
