SWIMMING. The Waimate Amateur Swimming Club held a successful meeting in the Public Baths on Monday night, when a good programme was witnessed by a large number of interested spectators. All the events were well contested, and some very close finishes were seen. The following were the results: — 50 YARDS MEN’S HANDICAP: First heat—J. Grange (3sec) 1, D. d’Auvergne (scr) 2, S. LONG PLUNGE: (Ladies)—Miss D. Sauer (35ft) 1, Miss J. Wood (33ft 6in) 2. A water polo match resulted in a drawn game after an exciting contest, neither side registering a score. The teams were:—L. d’Auvergne (capt.), L. R. Templeton, S. Kirkpatrick, G. Bird, E. Segar. E. Carr and J. Carr; and L. Milson (capt.), M. Ross, R. Stevenson, C. Parry, J. Granger, A. Boyd, and J. Boyd. SCHOOJj COMMITTEE.. A meeting of the Waimate School Committee was held on Monday evening, there being present—Mr W. F. George (chairman), and Messrs A. Grant, W. Anderson, H. Joliffe, and W. Hettrick. The Canterbury Education Board advised the appointment of Mr R. J. Carlton, as an assistant master at the school. The Board also advised its intention of appointing Miss Mabel Watson as assistant mistress.—The appointment was approved. Resignations were accepted from Mr C. W. Kibblewhite and Miss Elder who have been appointed to other positions. On the suggestion of the chairman, it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Miss Elder in her recent bereavement. The action of the secretary in having forwarded letters of appreciation to the resigned teachers was approved. A letter was read from the Eudcation Board approving the purchase of land in John Street, sections 356 and 359, containing 1 ac. 13 per., offered by the Waimate Borough Council for lease (with right of purchase within a year), at £lO/3/6 per annum. Mr Grant proposed that the Board’s letter be sent to Mr J. Bitchener, M.P., asking him to get into touch with the Minister of Education, pointing out the necessity for the school garden, and stating it would be a pity if anyone else stepped in and secured the property.—The proposal was adopted. It was decided that the dental clinic be relaid in lawn and kept in order. In regard to the picnic excursion, the chairman and the secretary were appointed a weather committee, and it was decided to ring the school bell in the event of the picnic being postponed owing to bad weather.
