TELEGRAPHISTS’ BETTING TALK TAPPED. By xeiegrapli—Pres* Association. AUCKLAND, December 5. Conversations on the telephone used by the operating staff .of the Auckland telegraph office during the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meetings on Saturday and Monday have resulted in the interrogation of over 40 members of the telegraph staff by two inspectors of the department, who were summoned from Wellington, The line was tapped by laying a wire under the carpet, and officers of the Department took notes of all conversations bearing on betting or tips. Those who used the telephone were confronted with notes of these conversations. In some eases the employees sought legal advice. It is a rule of the Department that any officer refusing to supply information to a superior may be suspended. Betting conversations on telegraph ’phones by officers on duty are strictly forbidden.
