ORARI.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. * The monthly meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute took place in the Sunday Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon, the president, Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald, presiding over a large attendance. Miss C. G. McQueen was elected a member of the Institute, making a total membership of 63 members. Correspondence was received , from the Hawke’s Bay Federation, referring to Women’s Institute classes for soft toys at the Hawke's Bay show. Correspondence was received also from the secretary of the Trumpington Institute, Cambridge, England. Arrangements were made for members to take monthly turns in corresponding with members of the Trumpington Institute, the letters to be read aloud at the meetings. The January meeting will take the form of a garden party, and for this several members offered to take part in a demonstration of folk dancing on the lawn. Mrs Hughes kindly offered to make the bonnets, and the secretary to arrange for practices. Several announcements were made in connection with the arts and crafts exhibition, and two members were appointed to act as door-keepers at same. Miss Priddle was elected to the Hessian Committee. A lecture on “Bees and Bee-keeping” was then given by Mr C. Unwin, secretary of the South Canterbury Beekeepers’ Association, which proved most instructive, and was thoroughly enjoyed. The lecture was illustrated by means of a hive and other equipment. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer. ' Soft toy-making was the subject of a demonstration which was given by the president, Mrs Macdonald. Members showed particular interest, and purchased a large number of paper patterns of the toys. A “smelling" competition created great interest, the winners being Miss De Lautour and Miss R. Killoh, while Misses Wood and McQueen and Mrs W. O. Smith were runners-up. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Killoh, Brown, Worner and Black. After the singing of some folk songs, the meeting closed with the National Anthem;

A LITTLE RAIN.

Very dry conditions in Orari were slightly relieved on Thursday, when heavy showers from the south-east commenced to fall, and lasted for several hours. The fall, however, was hardly enough to effect much good, as the land had become very dry, owing to the recent nor’-westers. Some good, lasting showers would be very welcome to farmers.
