Photographs of the new 60,000-ton North German Lloyd liner Bremen, taken while she was in drydock at Southampton, have disclosed one of the secrets of the 28.5-knot speed attained by the vessel on her trial tests in the North Sea, writes an English paper. The pictures show that the rudder is shaped like the wing of an aeroplane on the streamline principle which navigators said recently serves to increase its effectiveness in steering and to reduce eddies and currents which interfere with the propellors, thus minimising resistance to the speed of the ship. The new typo of rudder used in the Bremen was invented by Dr. Max Oorts, of Hamburg, widely known as a designer of hydroplanes, who was for several years associated with the late Count Zeppelin, airship designer. Ships’ officers stated that the aeroplane wing type of rudder had been tried out successfully m single-screw freight steamships and was found to increase the speed by 4 to 8 per cent and to save 10 to 15 per cent of fuel. [Hie Bremen is the first large passenger liner to be equipped with the new rudder, and, if it continues to prove successful there is no doubt, it was said, that the aeroplane rudder will he adopted by other steamship companies in the North Atlantic and South American trades, where speed and economy of fuel consumption are most necessary.
