SPORTING.
The first race at Ashburton to-day is timed to begin at 12.45, and the seventh (and last) at 4.35.
Several three-year-olds who are candidates for classic honours are expected to race at Ashburton to-day, among them being Pink Coat, Dutch Money, and Flair. The others include Desert Song, Pixie Gold and Meprisant. Night Lad also is engaged, but he has no classic engagements in New Zealand. Dutch Money will be a runner in the Longbeach Handicap (with G. Salt up), and is likely to be a pronounced favourite. If she is up to Guineas form she should account for the opposition. Pink Coat and Flair are in the Farewell Handicap, the Washdyke colt being called on to concede 301 b to the Riccarton filly. If Flair is to have any chance in the Auckland Guineas, she should easily beat Pink Coat with such a big concession, as she will receive only 51b in the Guineas. C. Emerson is to ride Pink Coat at Ashburton to-day. L. J. Ellis is in Australia, and A. E. Ellis has engagements at Avondale.
Night Lad was paid up for in two races at Ashburton. He has 7.5 in the Ashburton Handicap and 8.10 in the Farewell Handicap, but if reports concerning riding arrangements are correct, he. seems most likely to start in the shorter event.
