SYDNEY’S BANK HOLD-UP.

The Commissioners of the Government Savings Bank, Sydney, have provided gifts of £IOO and £SO respectively for Thomas Holdsgrove (assistant), and N. Everett (manager), In recognition of their plucky action in yesterday’s hold-up. [Three masked men daringly held up the manager and the assistant of the Woollahra branch of the Government Savings Bank, on Thursday afternoon. The assistant, Thomas Holdsgrove, dived for a revolver under the counter, and was shot in the leg. The men then fired at the manager, N. Everett, the bullet grazing his arm. Apparently nonplussed by the unexpected resistance of the bank staff, the men raced away without attempting to raid the bank’s funds, and escaped in a motor car, the engine of which was running. The police later arrested three men, who were charged with attempted robbery under arms and shooting with intent to murder.] ROBBERY UNDER ARMS. RAIDERS OF BUTCHER’S SHOP GAOLED. William Wilton (29) and William Nelson (30), convicted of robbery under arms at Briggs’ butcher’s shop, Redfern, were each sentenced to five year’s Imprisonment. [Two masked robbers, who had secreted themselves in a butcher’s shop at Redfern owned by Michael Briggs, bound and gagged Briggs, covered him with revolvers, and commenced to hunt for cash. The intruders discovered a bottle of whisky and impudently consumed a large portion of the contents. A woman neighbour heard the men threatening Briggs, and she telephoned to the police, who dashed to the scene in a motor-car. They arrested the bandits but not before a shot had been fired by one of them at the woman who had given the alarm.]
