As a result of a fiendish attack by a man with a bootmaker’s knife, Mrs Alice Smith is in hospital in a critical condition. Seventy stitches have been inserted into wounds in her throat and face. Frank Ryan has been charged with wounding with intent to murder. Mrs Smith was buying an article from the man when he grabbed her purse. She fought with him. Then the knife was drawn and the woman was badly slashed.
