GREAT EXPLOSION IN NANKING.
Munition Depot Blown Up. FIRE SPREADING TO CITY. (United Press Association—By Electric * Telegraph—Copyr ~ht.) (Received August 27, 12.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, August 26. One of the biggest munition depots in the whole of China, situated within the walls of Nanking exploded this morning. The causes are at present unknown.
It is stated that the explosion was probably due to the intense heat prevailing last week. The continued sporadic explosions of small arms and cannon munition, resembled a complete battle. It is unknown at present whether there are any casualties or the extent of the damage, though it is reported the ensuing fire is spreading, and the city has been placed under martiai law.
