Mr W. H. Hunt left Timaru for Wellington yesterday afternoon. The Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, passed through Timaru en route for Wellington yesterday. Mr Bernard Tripp will leave for Wellington to-day to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation. A Press telegram from Wellington states that Captain B. M. Aldwell, of the steamer Tahiti, which arrived from San Francisco yesterday, has retired from the service of the Union Company, after forty-four years. He intends to reside in San Francisco. A cable message from Melbourne reports that among the passengers by the liner Orama is Mr G. McNamara, chief of the New Zealand Postal Department, and Colonel G. C. Hamilton (former military secretary to Lord Islington). Colonel Hamilton is spending a few days with the South Australian Governor before proceeding to New Zealand. A cable message from London reports that a rumour is current mentioning the name of Commander J. M. Kenworthy, as a likely successor to Sir Charles Fergusson as Governor-Gene-ral of New Zealand. Commander Kenworthy, M.P., who declines to confirm or deny the rumour, is the eldest son of Lord Strabolgi, and is 42 years of age. He entered the Royal Navy 27 years ago, and served with distinction in the Great War. Commander Kenworthy entered the House of Commons in 1919 as Liberal Member for Central Hull, and held the seat in the same interest till 1926, displaying considerable Parliamentary gifts, especially at question time. He is an all-round j athlete. In October, 1926, he gave his adhesion to the Labour Party, and. resigning his seat to test the feelings of 1 his constituents on his change of party, was triumphantly returned, and at the election on May 30, carried the seat by a majority of 7624 over his Conserva- I tive opponent, there being three candidates in the field, but he scored a clear majority of approximately 3000.
