FAIRLIE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald." Sir,—lt was with regret I read in your paper recently that the Fairlie School Committee had decided to close the school for one week only this vacation. The recent floods and epidemic were no faults of the children—many of them could not have attended if the school had remained open for the fortnight in July. I understand most of the children and some of the teachers suffered influenza and colds of one sort or another, and therefore It seems all

the more pity that they cannot have the holiday now, when it is rightly due. Being a lover of children, and knowing how good the sunshine is for them, I feel sure that the small amount of lessons missed, will be amply compensated for by the extra health gained in a few weeks of sunshine, especially after the prolonged spell of wet and cold weather. On account of bad weather again this week, this letter has been unfortunately delayed, but I trust it is not too late, and that the School Committee will reconsider their decision and at least give the children and their teachers a fortnight’s holiday.— I am, etc., MORE SUNSHINE. Fairlie, August 20.
