AN EXPLANATION.
To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald “ Sir.—As I have been inundated with Inquiries as to why no representation was made by myself to have the contest for the Beri Cup located in T* muka, I shall be glad of your publication of the following explanation. Despite my present indisposition, every effort was made to get in touch with the Rugby Union, and I was promised support in my written application by officials of that Union. On the evening of the last meeting, such application was taken in committee, whilst representations by the local Club, submitted and endorsed by me, were not included in inward correspondence, although posted in ample time for consideration, and I believe good support for the foregoing letters was forthcoming from the Star Football Club. Considering the writer’s long association with the game, and the support given to the Union by members of my family, my application was entitled to the courtesy of an open discussion, as the communication contained generous proposals for the entertainment of the visiting team. The indifferent weather conditions, and the state of the ground, were likewise held not to be deterrent to the holding of a very popular fixture, and consequently the game lost a good deal of its finer features.—l am. etc., FLORENCE BERI. Temuka, August 24.
