LITTLE RHYMES FOR LITTLE PEOPLE.

THE BAD RABBIT. A rabbit came across our lawn, He wouldn’t eat the weeds;.. But nibbled all the tiny plants And scratched up all my seeds. And when around the beds we put Wire netting, strong and fine, He stared as if to say “Those beds Are no more yours than mine.” So underneath the wire he made A hole, and soon we found That every little plant of mine Was nibbled to the ground. And then he washed his cheeky face Upon the silver dew, And kicked his legs as if to say “I don’t care much for you.”

MARKET DAY. Ho, heigh-ho! It is market day; Lads and lassies, run out to play. A penny for Jack and a penny for Jean To spend at Dame Tabitha’s stall on the green.

She’s gingerbread crackers and air balloons, Peppermint candy and macaroons. Did ever you see such a grand array, Ho heigh-ho! on a market day. GROWN-UPS. When you are only four years old, You have to be as good as gold; You mayn’t play circus in the hall When Mummie’s ladies come to call. I rather like the cakes and tea, But they’re so fond of kissing me; They have pink cheeks and lovely rings, But, oh! they do say silly things. They call me “Pet” and “Curlyhead,” And ask what time I go to bed; Do I like playing in the Park And am I frightened of the dark! But Daddy’s friends are not like that. They say: “Hullo! So this is Pat.” Then sit down on the nursery floor, And play like little boys of four. They take my soldiers and my train, My wooden blocks and aeroplane— It’s not much fun for little boys, When grown-ups play with all their toys.
