The Bluff Harbour Board has announced that it would continue the Stewart Island ferry service with t. e Southland or the Theresa Ward until September 30th, 1930. Increased fares and freight rates will take effect from October Ist next.— (Press Assn.)

Radio Station 6WF (Perth, W.A.), who now operates on a wave-ler.gth of 1250 metres, will change over on September Ist to 435 metres, and will come on to the dial of ordinary receivers. A slight adjustment of the wave-length of 2FC Sydney will be necessitated by the rearrangement.

On Sunday the children attending the Orari Presbyterian Sunday School had a delightful time, opening a parcel donated by Mr D. Stewart, Bircnoank, Orari. The parcel contained a gift book for each child in the Sunday School. Master Chambers was deputed to write to Mr Stewart, expressing the gratitude of the children for his generous gift.

A fire at the residence of Mr J. n Price, McDonald Road, Waimataitai, at about five o'clock yesterday .afternoon necessitated a visit from (lie Timaru Fire Brigade. The fire broke out in the ceiling, close by a faulty chimney. The prompt action of the Brigade, however, stopped any serious damage being done. Most of the damage was caused by water.

A return prepared by the Internal Affairs Department at the call of Mr H. S. S. Kyle (Reform, Riccarton) has been presented in the House of Representatives, showing that 35 Public servants have retired in the couse of the last five years with an annual superannuation of between £SOO and £700: 11 with an annual superannuation of between £7OO and £1000: and three with an annual superannuation in excess of £IOOO.

In the course of the discussion on the Government's taxation proposals at the meeting of the Council of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday evening, the lcllowlng remarks were credited to Mr J. Anstey: “There is not a single Britisn Dominion which imposes a graduated tax on companies, thereby exempting shareholders from taxation.” This statement, Mr Anstey indicated, was an extract from the report of the Taxation Commission of 1925.

In the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the member for Riccarton, Mr H. H. S. Kyle urged that the Government should not be in too much of a hurry to expend £90,000 on buildings at Massey College. He said that Lincoln College was able and willing to provide the whole of the agricultural education of this Dominion for the next two or three years. He suggested that the Government should hold over the matter of additional expenditure at Massey College, and allow- Lincoln College to carry on the work that it had done for the last fifty years.

The ferry steamer Wahine arrived at Lyttelton yesterday at 7.55, an hour and ten minutes behind her usual time. The Wingatui, the Canopus and the Gale, which left Wellington for Lyttelton on Tuesday afternoon, should, under ordinary circumstances have reached port on Wednesdaymorning, but the vessels had not put in an appearance at noon yesterday. The Maori passed the Wingatui in the Strait on Tuesday evening and she was labouring heavily against wind and sea, but the Wingatui was not sighted by the Wahine, as the density of the atmosphere, caused by the thick rain, rendered visibility bad. The Totara left Tarakohe at 11.30 o’clock on Tuesday evening for Lyttelton, and should have arrived yesterday morning, but will not arrive until to-day.
