MIRAMAR FLOODED. By Telegraph—Preaa Ae«o*iatton. WELLINGTON. August 22. The exceptionally heavy southerly, with fierce gusts of wind, and continuous rain, have flooded a portion of the flats in the suburb of Miramar, where drainage works have only lately been started, and are not yet complete. The water is a foot and more deep in places, and some houses are cut off. The pumping station, which deals with the sewerage, is unable to cope with the extra water, and sewage is finding its way into the flood waters. The railway line to the Hutt, which usually suffers in a bad southerly, is not damaged so far. After the break early in the winter, a quantity of heavy concrete blocks from demolitions in the city was secured by the Railway Department and placed as a curtain in the worst spots. They have acted as an effective screen to the embankments.
HEAVY RAINFALL. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 22. The heavy southerly continued throughout last night, with high winds and heavy rain. Two inches of rain fell in 24 hours to nine a.m. in Wellington city, and about 3i inches in Hutt. The Hutt river is up, but districts usually badly affected by water are less seriously threatened on the present occasion. There are numerous small slips about, but nothing serious so far has been recorded. Owing to inadequate storm water drains, Miramar is badly flooded and the tram service is suspended. RIMUTAKA ROAD BLOCKED. FLOODING IN WAIRARAPA. By T«legr*pb—Prasa m-cuuuu, MASTERTON, August 22. The latest reports are that the big slip in the Rimutaka road will not be removed before Monday at the earliest, and in the meantime all traffic is suspended. There are several other bad slips on the road, which also has fallen away in places. In the Lower Valiev district, lowlying areas arc under water, and many slips and washouts are reported. The Hinakura road bridge is rendered unsafe for traffic, and others are damaged. The Martinborough-Featherston road is blocked with water.
