The Returned Soldiers’ Association, sitting in conference, cheered the notification from the Government that James Layden. who shot dead A. E. Whitford, a Labour member of Parliament. would soon be set free. Layden. who is a returned soldier, was sentenced to life imprisonment during the Labour Government's regime. The returned soldiers have ever since pleaded natural law as justification for the shooting. When he was arrested Layden told the police that Whitford had taken his wife to a house on assignation. Shooting, he said, was too good for Whitford.
