MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
TIMARU, AUGUST 21, 1929. (Before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.) CIVIL CASES. In a judgment summons case, Thomas Murray was ordered to pay J. and A. Wilkinson, Ltd., £26 5s Id on or before October 21. in default 21 days’ imprisonment. H. J. D. Sheldon was ordered to pay P. J. Bowman £1 8s Id, forthwith in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Charles V. Kirke (Mr L. M. Inglis) claimed from A. M. Bryant, the sum of £9 18s being balance of rent due in respect of the lease of a shop. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for the amount claimed, with costs £2 6s. FALSE PRETENCES. Eighteen charges of obtaining money by false pretences, by falsely representing that he was a representative of the New Zealand Pictorial News, Auckland, were preferred against Percy Harry Ellis, alias Henry Victor Miller. The offences were committed between April and August of last year; and were in respect of the following persons and amounts: Margaret Sparks (Auckland) 7/6; Mrs Atherton (Auckland) 12/6; Frederick G. Blott (Auckland), 10/-; Horace H. Hancock (Auckland) 10/-; H. Hopkins (Nelson), 12/6; E. McGaughran (Mairunui) 10/-; G. N. Brothers (Mairunui), 8/-; Minnie S. Aitken (Mairunui), 6/-; James F. Anderson (Mairunui) 15/-; Winifred Etterspank (Ma-
lUi) 15/-; Winifred Etterspank (Manuui), 12/6; Charles H. Knowles (Mangatainoka) 5/-; Eltham Motors, Ltd. (Eltham) 15/-; Ferris F. Dale. (Martinborough), 10/-; W. K. Kitch-
ing (Martinborough), 10/-; E. A. Sleigh (Auckland), 7/6; W. R. Edwards (Cambridge), 15/-; Minnie E. Rippon (Cambridge), 15/- and A. J. McCready (Otorohanga) 15/-.
Accused pleaded guilty to all the charges. Senior-Sergeant Gibson said the accused went to the people concerned, and accepted deposits for the Pictorial News, when he had no authority to do so. Accused said that he was before the Court in Auckland and Otahuhu, when the cases were dismissed. He was in Otorohanga on August 8, and yet, according to the charges, he was supposed to be in Nelson the following day.
Senior-Sergeant Gibson said that the receipts were dated by accused himself. Some of the charges he did not remember anything about. He had simply pleaded guilty to lessen the sentence.
Senior-Sergeant Gibson said that accused was at present serving sentence on similar charges. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on within six months.
