ON THE VERGE OR CIVIL WAR.
Grave Situation In Austria. MENACING ATTITUDE OF FASCISTS. (United Press Association—By Electrlo Tel “graph—Copyright.) (Received August 20. 8.30 pjn.) LONDON, August 20. The Vienna correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that the latest reports give thre? killed and two hundred injured in the clash at Marein. This clash, together with previous clashes, and “Heimwehr” leaders’ speeches, is causing anxiety, and an outbreak of civil war is predicted in September, when the harvest has been gathered, and when the “Heimwehr" can call on the peasant forces. The ‘‘Heimwehr” is known to possess large hidden depots of arms, with which the Government has not interfered. The Socialists are practically unarmed, but say the workers will ba compelled to take action themselves to defend the Constitution and the Republic. (Several persons were killed, and from 30 to 40 wounded, in a fierce clash between Fascists and Socialists at Marein. Socialists obtained a permit to demonstrate, and Fascists known as the “Heimwehr,” broke their own promise to confine their counter demonstration to a neighbouring village, and poured into Marein in order to break up the Socialist meeting. They were stoned by the Socialists, and retaliated by the use of rifles and machine-guns).
