SOUTH AFRICANS IN ENGLAND.

Play In Final Test Match. VISITORS AHEAD ON FIRST INNINGS. (United Prsss Association—By Electrie Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, August 19. England completed the first # innings in the final Test for 258, Sutcliffe carrying his first day's total to 104. At stumps South Africa had exceeded England’s score for five wickets. England resumed with great confidence, but Vincent, with a wily slow ball, quite deceived Leyland. Carr's innings was extraordinarily hazardous and he was almost caught at the wicket first ball. Three other lucky strokes went near the fieldsmen. Sutcliffe, at 96, was nearly caught in the slips, otherwise his innings was sound, solid, and chanceless. Catterall, attempting to pull, was easily taken at short leg. Mitchell was completely beaten by a fast rising ball. With three wickets down for 20 runs, it might have been surf osed t’iat Deane’s so-called gamble in sending England in had been a boomerang; but the two old hands, Deane and Taylor , staged a magnificent fight, incidentally establishing a record for a South African fourth-wicket partnership of 214. They put on 200 in three hours by solid batting, mostly driving and leg hits. The partnership ended _ when Deane, giving his first chance, snicked a ball to the slips, Woolley brilliantly accepting a wide left-hand catch. Taylor soon followed, snicking one to the wicket-keeper. He played beautiful cricket, with especially powerful driving, and was quite chanceless. He hit 12 fours. When set, both men gave an exhibition of sound, forceful batting. The attendance was 17,000. Following are details:— England. First Innings.
