MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union was held last evening. Present —Messrs H. H. Fraser (chairman), W. J. Watson, J. Roseveare, A. Tyson, A. B. Rowlands, D. Hertnon, A. Hunt, J. Harley, D. O’Connor, G. F. Doyle, A. B. Herdman. A letter was received from Mr E. M. Russell, of the Temuka Club, advising that he had been injured in the Town v. Country match on July 13. He had been off work one week, and asked if the Rugby Union would compensate him for loss of wages.—Referred to Insurance Committee. The Otago Union wrote, in reply to a letter from the South Canterbury Union, advising that they regretted that it was impossible to send their representative team to South Canterbury this season. A team would be sent next year. The letter pointed out that the Committee could not undertake to have an annual match, as they had been endeavouring to cut down their representative fixtures of late years. There were certain Unions they had to meet, however, and they had to limit the number of representative matches each year to a reasonable number. —Referred to Flag Committee. The Star Club forwarded complimentary tickets for their annual dance. A letter was received from the Rector of St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, thanking the Union for the arrangements made in connection with their visit to Timaru, to play their match with Timaru Boys’ High School. Every member of the party thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and the game. The Ashburton Union advised that September 14 would be suitable for their team to play South Canterbury, at Timaru. The letter asked what prospects there were for a junior representative game, and if a return senior representative game could be played this season. It was decided to ask Ashburton if it would be possible to send a junior representative team on the same day as the seniors, on September 14. It was further decided that a return senior game could not be played. It was ‘ decided to make an effort to stage a junior representative game between South Canterbury and North Otago, as a curtain-raiser to the senior representative game, at Timaru on August 31. Mr Hertnon gave a short report on the visit of the South Canterbury senior representative team to Oamaru on Saturday last. Throughout, the team had been very hospitably treated. The game, played on a heavy ground, was a treat to witness, and had been one of the best seen in Oamaru for a good many seasons. He thought a letter should be sent to the North Otago Union, thanking them for the way they had entertained the team. For the junior team, Mr Roseveare said they too had had a most enjoyable time, and had enjoyed the game to the full. He seconded Mr Hertnon’s motion regarding sending a letter of appreciation. This was unanimously agreed to. Both Mr Hertnon and Mr Roseveare spoke in high terms of the referees. The secretary (Mr J. V. McKeague), who attended the Canterbury Rugby Union’s jubilee last week, gave a short report on the proceedings. All visitors had been treated in a most hospitable manner. He thought Canterbury should be congratulated on the splendid result of the jubilee. The secretary was thanked for his report, and also for having represented the Union at the jubilee. It was decided to make a donation of £5/5/- to the South Canterbury Hockey Association, to assist a ladies’ touring team to visit Gisborne early in August.
